It has been recommended that my production staff become IPC certified and that we require our vendors do the same. I've read the IPC website but was wondering what your experiences were with this training, good and bad?

Circuit Technology, Inc. is having a free online technical seminar describing the IPC courses and there relevance. You should check that out and there should be other customers there that may also have feedback for how their programs are working.
