For selective soldering I would first look at the alloys your products require. Do you run tin-lead, lead free or both? If you run (or may run in the future) two alloys, then look for a machine that has quick change solder pots.

Secondly, do your boards have irregular shapes or do connectors hang over the edge? If so then a conveyorized model may not work for you without custom pallets to support the board since conveyors only support the front and rear edges. Also consider the weight of the assembly with regard to the possibility of sagging. I ended up choosing a machine that can easily be configured with fingers to support our sometimes irregular boards. If high volume, then a conveyor with pallets may make more sense if you can put it in a line.

Lastly, consider top side preheaters if you have copper planes or large mass components on the top. Almost any SS machine should do what you want with these considerations accounted for.

Re: preheaters, YMMV, but my limited experience with SS is that without preheat these things have very limited value, even with boards that are not what you would think are thermally challenging.

With preheat they seem to be able to do anything you want if you have the right nozzles and a reasonably well thought out pcb design.

We have two selective wave machines that run all day every day. We're pretty high mix. Almost all products don't require preheat but it is nice to have in case you need it on something dense. Good reliable flux sprayer is important. Software that turns the pot on (off-hours) is nice. Operators come in for day shift and the pots are ready to go = big time saver. Maintenance is important. Keep them clean as flux tends to get all over the place. High activity flux for nozzles is needed. Tooling is important. In our case, probably 75% of builds need tooling. We build it in house as we have machine shop. If you don't, could get expensive fast.
