Interference to lights from Heller 1707 XL oven | 12 September, 2020

I have just built a new factory and installed the old Heller 1707 XL oven. When I run the oven the LED panel lights and downlights in the entire building begin to shimmer after 2nd zone is switched on. It does not get worse when the whole 7 zones are on or when I turn on another machine in the area. The problem is not the lights flickering on and off but a subtle shimmering that causes headache and dizziness. If I look direct at a light it does not appear to be shimmering but when I look away I feel it. Anyone experienced this or know a fix? Could a filter at the switchboard on the lighting circuit help or could this be related to not enough current capacity and short duration pulses from switching gear in the machine ? Thanks for any help, local electricians don' know what to do about it. It is installed on 415 3-Phase MEN power circuit in Australia.

Hi.

1) recommend to phone up Heller for assistance on this case

2) using the wakeup profile, can you confirm if the problem remains or not when you skip the warm up of zone # 2?

3) each zone is based on 2 heaters (this is what we have on our 1809exl) - turn OFF the machine. Turn off the circuit breakers to be sure the machine is off. Check the resistance of each heater pair which should be around 9-10 ohms. If around 18 then you have an open heater.

4) suspecting that you are drawing too much current during the use / warm up of this machine. You can confirm the voltage of each phase as well upon the guidance of Heller or the troubleshooting manual.

Do you have a trouble shooting manual for your machine?

Does the flickering go away once the oven reaches its set temperature? It will draw a lot more current while its warming up then when its running.

Are your lights running on one leg of the same 415 VAC circuit?

Reflow ovens are mostly resistive loads so you shouldn't need filtering like you would for a large motor.

My guess is a funky transformer somewhere in your plant introducing noise when the oven is powered up.

Bear in mind I'm no expert, I just know enough about this sort of thing to not electrocute my self or burn the plant down.

We have the same issue. It was present with our old 1500 and is even more present with our newer 1800EXL. For us, it seems to be related to the blowers, not the heaters. If we are in cooldown or wakeup the issue is still there with the heaters off.

We use LED lights, which tend to be sensitive to power fluctuations. I'm guessing that the blowers that Heller uses are pretty noisy, and they don't filter them much on the mains line. So the conducted emissions go back on the mains, and couples to the LED lights.

Guessing that a lot of these ovens wouldn't pass emissions testing, since there's no way that this much noise be conducted is OK. For us, it really isn't noticeable, so I don't bother trying to mitigate it.

Some threads that may help:

still recommend that you contact Heller for advice.

Consider to insert a UPS system between your hydro and one of the LED light fixture to see if this UPS is able to filter out the noise.

Just my 2 bits (half nibble)...

Just curious if anyone has ever used an EMF meter? I have used a static field meter but that is quite different. I have had hearing aids that had a switch that switched from an audio mike to a telecoil that would pick up the EMF from the phone speaker. I was amazed at how much electrical noise there is on an airplane for example.

A quick search on Amazon shows a wide variety of EMF meters at various price points. But the cheap ones might be just junk and the useful ones might be expensive. Some look like what we would want in a case such as the OP is talking about. Some look they are aimed at people who wear tinfoil hats, and some talk about ghost hunting.

Please try to run wakeup recipe and heat up one zone at a time to see if its related to any zone or load on the facility side. Please contact Heller ServiceNJ@hellerindustries.com to get help with the issue.

New factory - old oven. Something is different in power in the new place. Compare with old place and fix.
