Voids in solder fillet

Electronics Forum | Wed Apr 16 10:45:16 EDT 2003 | Takfire

Recent cross-section analysis for a customer complaint revealed voiding in the solder fillet. In some cases, the remains of outgassing were also observed. During the failure analysis, we also observed failures where the solder fillet wicked on the

It is an interesting situation....one that merits as much business philosophy analysis as technical analysis. I'll be getting my official 60 day notice today. Any criticism about our overseas suppliers (that were selected by sr. management w/o in

What was the original complaint? when you say solder wicked onto top of capacitor do you mean it was dewetted from the board and only on the cap? What type of device showed voiding? how bad was it 20%,50%? I have found that the paste type seems to

Dave, I am not exactly sure what is driving them to believe that this is a capacitor issue. It is unfortunate, that this belief has slowed their activity in further understanding their manufacturing process. The caps are BME (Base Metal Electrode

Not sure how else to describe this. We've received some boards (1/2" x 3.5" x .0325" board built on panels of 24) with numerous resistors showing separation of the solder from the metallization at the top of the joint. There are 26 0805's on the bo

Thanks for the info, Here is a couple more questions (and you thought you were done) What size are these caps /res? how thick is your stencil? what type of oven are you using? what is the finish of the board? Anyway, it seems like (from a distance)t

Wave solder Nitrogen - how much is really needed to make an improvement

Electronics Forum | Mon Dec 11 14:30:46 EST 2023 | proy

We all know that purity of nitrogen is critical for selective soldering. When it comes to wave solder- how much or what percentage reduction in oxygen is enough to make a difference in 1) at least reducing dross buildup and 2) being anble to cut ba

How much solder is too much?
