Is anyone using a laser to selectively solder components to a board? I'm just starting to research selective soldering methods for the company i work for as we're looking to replace our current hand soldering processes for lead- and lead free- produ

Good point about the cycle time, we've had a think about this issue, we are set up mainly to do small batch sizes, the reasoning for thinking about laser soldering is that there is no requirements for wave solder tooling, on a batch of 50 boards or s

Thought I would reply and try to assist. PROMATION, my company, also manufactures Diode Laser soldering systems but with this stated we also manufacturer iron tip systems, soft beam systems and hot air solutions. The reasons are simple. Diode Laser

IR guns do not measure the temperature at the laser dot. They measure the temperature at an ever increasing circle. (a big circle at any distance) I don't think you will get an accurate reading unless you hold the gun a few inches above the board aft

Current Acceptable HMP Soldering Methods: 1. Wave / Selective Solder: Some Brands require upgrades to heating elements and Pot materials 2. Laser: Works well with PTH and medium/large passive SMT. Damage to PCB masking can occur when try

Jim, In most cases if you can eliminate a process you will save money. With that in mind, an all surface mount or all through hole design is prefered. There are alternatives to that rule, like hybrid designs that can be pin and paste soldered. It al

And why do you want to control the process? To prevent defects, I would think. Actually orginally the way I first saw SPC was to reduce inspection. If you are using SPC for plating thickness, you don't have to measure every piece to be confident the

Depending on your application, you may need to pre-heat before Soft Beam (unless they make one for it now). Plus, very small connections seem to push it's limits. The beam can only get so narrow. Lasers are good but reflectivity can come into play
