Modern 2D / 3D X-Ray Inspection - Emphasis on BGA, QFN, 3D Packages, and Counterfeit Components

Technical Library | 2010-09-16 18:45:06.0

With PCB complexity and density increasing and also wider use of 3D devices, tougher requirements are now imposed on device inspection both during original manufacture and at their subsequent processing onto printed circuit boards. More complicated and de

Reliability Performance of Very Thin Printed Circuit Boards with regard to Different any Layer Manufacturing Technologies.

Technical Library | 2013-09-19 17:25:32.0

The next generation of smart phones will demand very thin multi-layer boards to reduce the product thickness again. This paper shows three different manufacturing approaches, which can be used for very thin any-layer build-ups. The technological approaches are compared on reliability level – the any-layer copper filled micro-via technology which is to be considered as state of the art technology for high end phones and the ALIVH-C/G technology that is well established in Japan. A test vehicle design featuring test coupons for comprehensive reliability test series has been defined as target application for investigation...

Novel Approaches for Minimizing Pad Cratering

Technical Library | 2015-10-29 18:19:33.0

With the electronic industry moving towards lead-free assembly, traditional SnPb-compatible laminates need to be replaced with lead-free compatible laminates that can withstand the higher reflow temperature required by lead-free solders. Lead-free compatible laminates with improved heat resistance have been developed to meet this challenge but they are typically more brittle than SnPb laminates causing some to be more susceptible to pad cratering. In this paper, two novel approaches for minimizing pad cratering will be discussed. Preliminary results which validate the two approaches will also be presented.

Counterfeit Electronic Components Identification: A Case Study

Technical Library | 2018-09-12 21:04:28.0

Counterfeit electronic components are finding their way into today’s defense electronics. The problem gets even more complex when procuring DMS (diminishing manufacturing source) parts. This paper will provide a brief introduction to counterfeit prevention and detection standards, particularly as they relate to the Aerospace and Defense sector. An analysis of industry information on the types and nature of counterfeit components will be discussed in order to illustrate those most likely to be counterfeited, followed a specific case at a major defense contractor.

The Effect of Pb Mixing Levels on Solder Joint Reliability and Failure Mode of Backward Compatible, High Density Ball Grid Array Assemblies

Technical Library | 2015-01-08 17:26:59.0

Regardless of the accelerating trend for design and conversion to Pb-free manufacturing, many high reliability electronic equipment producers continue to manufacture and support tin-lead (SnPb) electronic products. Certain high reliability electronic products from the telecommunication, military, and medical sectors manufacture using SnPb solder assembly and remain in compliance with the RoHS Directive (restriction on certain hazardous substances) by invoking the European Union Pb-in-solder exemption. Sustaining SnPb manufacturing has become more challenging because the global component supply chain is converting rapidly to Pb-free offerings and has a decreasing motivation to continue producing SnPb product for the low-volume, high reliability end users. Availability of critical, larger SnPb BGA components is a growing concern
