0201 Placement - Only With The Right Team and Tools!

Technical Library | 2003-09-17 02:59:58.0

It appears very logical that the successor of the 0402 size SMD would be the 0201. Curves showing the life-cycle of a body size, from introduction to most used to only for special cases, are very similar for the 1206, 0805, 0603 and 0402. So there is reason to expect that the same will happen with the 0201. Until now there is only little evidence for this, but most technologies come later than expected but faster than expected!

Taking the LED Pick and Place Challenge

Technical Library | 2014-09-25 18:16:47.0

For the past few years there has been a shift in the Lighting Industry that has carried over to the surface mount technology assembly line. What is this shift you may ask? Well it is the LED revolution. This revolution or change in lighting has some very promising results already in practice and many more companies looking to implement the LED technology into their product portfolio's. With a number of companies looking to expand their portfolio to include LED fixtures there has been an increase in the number of companies that have started their own SMT lines, as well as a significant number of contract manufacturers to meet this new industries demands (...)This presentation will discuss some issues in the pick and place process for LEDs and presents a method to troubleshoot and resolve these issues.

Counterfeit Integrated Circuits: Detection, Avoidance, and the Challenges Ahead.

Technical Library | 2014-09-04 17:43:19.0

The counterfeiting of electronic components has become a major challenge in the 21st century. The electronic component supply chain has been greatly affected by widespread counterfeit incidents. A specialized service of testing, detection, and avoidance must be created to tackle the worldwide outbreak of counterfeit integrated circuits (ICs). So far, there are standards and programs in place for outlining the testing, documenting, and reporting procedures. However, there is not yet enough research addressing the detection and avoidance of such counterfeit parts. In this paper we will present, in detail, all types of counterfeits, the defects present in them, and their detection methods. We will then describe the challenges to implementing these test methods and to their effectiveness. We will present several anti-counterfeit measures to prevent this widespread counterfeiting, and we also consider the effectiveness and limitations of these anti-counterfeiting techniques.

Development of a Consistent and Reliable Thermal Conductivity Measurement Method, Adapted to Typical Composite Materials Used in the PCB Industry

Technical Library | 2017-05-04 17:35:01.0

Most of today's printed circuit board base materials are anisotropic and it is not possible to use a simple method to measure thermal conductivity along the different axis, especially when a good accuracy is expected. Few base material suppliers' datasheet show X, Y and Z thermal conductivities. In most cases, a single value is given, moreover determined with a generic methodology, and not necessarily adapted to the reality of glass-reinforced composites with a strong anisotropy. After reminding of the fundamentals in thermal science, this paper gives an overview of the state-of the art in terms of thermal conductivity measurement on PCB base materials, and some typical values. It finally proposes an innovative method called transient fin method, and associated test sample, to perform reliable and consistent in plane thermal conductivity measurement on anisotropic PCB base materials.

Case Study on the Validation of SAC305 and SnCu Based Solders in SMT, Wave and Hand-soldering at the Contract Assembler Level

Technical Library | 2007-11-15 15:54:44.0

At the contractor level once a product is required to be soldered with lead-free solders all the processes must be assessed as to insure the same quality a customer has been accustomed to with a Sn63Pb37 process is achieved. The reflow, wave soldering and hand assembly processes must all be optimized carefully to insure good joint formation as per the appropriate class of electronics with new solder alloys and often new fluxes.

A Designed Experiment for the Influence of Copper Foils on Impedance, DC Line Resistance and Insertion Loss

Technical Library | 2013-03-28 16:18:22.0

For the last couple of years, the main concerns regarding the electrical performance of blank PCB boards were impedance and ohmic resistance. Just recently, the need to reduce insertion loss came up in discussions with blank board customers (...) The paper describes the test vehicle and the testing methodology and discusses in detail the electrical performance characteristics. The influence of the independent variables on the performance characteristics is presented. Finally the thermal reliability of the boards built applying different copper foils and oxide replacements was investigated.

Overview of Quality and Reliability Issues in the National Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors

Technical Library | 1999-08-05 10:27:43.0

This document is an update to the 1994 Quality and Reliability Roadmap issued in support of the 1994 National Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors. This report revisits the challenges, constraints, priorities, and research needs pertaining to quality and reliability issues. It also provides key project proposals that must be implemented to address concerns about reliability attainment and defect learning. An expanded section on test-to-test, diagnostics, and failure analysis; an edited version of the Product Analysis Forum Roadmap; and an appendix containing a draft report highlighting reliability issues is included.

The Effect of Coating and Potting on the Reliability of QFN Devices.

Technical Library | 2014-08-28 17:09:23.0

The fastest growing package types in the electronics industry today are Bottom Termination Components (BTCs). While the advantages of BTCs are well documented, they pose significant reliability challenges to users. One of the most common drivers for reliability failures is the inappropriate adoption of new technologies. This is especially true for new component packaging like BTCs. Obtaining relevant information can be difficult since information is often segmented and the focus is on design opportunities not on reliability risks (...)Commonly used conformal coating and potting processes have resulted in shortened fatigue life under thermal cycling conditions. Why do conformal coating and potting reduce fatigue life? This paper details work undertaken to understand the mechanisms underlying this reduction. Verification and determination of mechanical properties of some common materials are performed and highlighted. Recommendations for material selection and housing design are also given.

An Experimental and Computational Study of the Current Carrying Capacity of High Performance PWB Interconnections

Technical Library | 2009-01-01 16:37:38.0

Recent technology advancement has enabled enhancement in PWB electrical performance and wiring density. These innovations have taken the form of improved materials, novel PWB interconnect structures, and manufacturing technology. One such advancement is Z-axis conductive interconnect. The Z-interconnect technology involves building mini-substrates of 2 or 3 layers each, then assembling several mini-substrates together using conductive paste.

Effect of Surface Oxide on the Melting Behavior of Lead-Free Solder Nanowires and Nanorods

Technical Library | 2013-07-18 12:12:40.0

Lead-free nanosolders have shown promise in nanowire and nanoelectronics assembly. Among various important parameters, melting is the most fundamental property affecting the assembly process. Here we report that the melting behavior of tin and tin/silver nanowires and nanorods can be significantly affected by the surface oxide of nanosolders.
