Resource-efficient adhesion and potting technologies in electronics manufacturing

Technical Library | 2022-08-02 17:35:18.0

Saving resources in electronics manufacturing is not an end in itself. It is closely linked with reducing costs and gaining a competitive advantage. However, innovative adhesion and potting technologies in combination with highly functional adhesives and potting media make a significant contribution to the ideal union between economic performance and a reduced ecological footprint.

Process Engineering - Why is preparation of adhesive bonding and potting materials necessary?

Technical Library | 2020-02-14 14:43:21.0

To meet the steady increase in technical requirements for electronic components, potting media properties must be extremely precise. Rheology, viscosity, filler content and curing behavior are only a few of the factors that play a role in their practical use. However, the growing complexity of materials often negatively impacts the ability to process or dispense them. In this case, material preparation and feeding systems specially designed for this purpose are required. These systems optimally prepare the material for the actual application and ensure homogeneous feeding to the dispensing system.

Coatings and Pottings: A Critical Update

Technical Library | 2021-08-11 01:00:37.0

Conformal coatings and potting materials continue to create issues for the electronics industry. This webinar will dig deeper into the failure modes of these materials, specifically issues with Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE), delamination, cracking, de-wetting, pinholes/bubbles and orange peel issues with conformal coatings and what mitigation techniques are available. Similarly, this webinar will look at the failure modes of potting materials, (e.g Glass Transition Temperature (Tg), PCB warpage, the effects of improper curing and potential methods for correcting these situations.

Liquid Tin Corrosion and Lead Free Wave Soldering

Technical Library | 2008-02-12 22:52:41.0

Corrosion of solder pots and solder pot components in wave soldering equipment has been reduced with the introduction of corrosion resistant coatings and improved lead free solder alloys. The latest trends in protecting wave solder machine components from liquid metal corrosion by lead free solder alloys will be presented in order to provide guidelines for evaluating existing equipment as well as for purchasing new systems.

Best Practices in Selecting Coatings and Pottings for Solar Panel Systems; Junction Boxes and Inverters

Technical Library | 2020-08-13 01:12:57.0

The solar industry has driven solutions that result in electronics systems that are required to perform in outside environments for over 25 years. This industry expectation has resulted in solutions to protect the electronics from failure that can result from interaction with moisture, and various chemicals leading to corrosion and shorting of the systems. Potting and encapsulation compounds can impart the very high level of protection from environmental, thermal, chemical, mechanical, and electrical conditions that the solar applications demand.

The overall process of manufacturing electronics assemblies is characterized by a number of very different procedures. Along the production chain, technologies for cutting, assembling, soldering, bonding, gluing, marking, potting, etc. are used, all of them have one thing in common: They produce airborne pollutants, some of which can have a significant impact on employees, manufacturing equipment and products - and for this reason need to be removed effectively and efficiently.

The Effect of Coating and Potting on the Reliability of QFN Devices.

Technical Library | 2014-08-28 17:09:23.0

The fastest growing package types in the electronics industry today are Bottom Termination Components (BTCs). While the advantages of BTCs are well documented, they pose significant reliability challenges to users. One of the most common drivers for reliability failures is the inappropriate adoption of new technologies. This is especially true for new component packaging like BTCs. Obtaining relevant information can be difficult since information is often segmented and the focus is on design opportunities not on reliability risks (...)Commonly used conformal coating and potting processes have resulted in shortened fatigue life under thermal cycling conditions. Why do conformal coating and potting reduce fatigue life? This paper details work undertaken to understand the mechanisms underlying this reduction. Verification and determination of mechanical properties of some common materials are performed and highlighted. Recommendations for material selection and housing design are also given.
