We are moving from ENIG to Immersion Ag. We notice PCB's with Ag finish getting more heat(increase in peak temp) than the ENIG. Any reasoning behind this phenomenon ? KT

If your fabricator understands and controls their in-house ENIG, you should be OK. It seems that fabs don't undererstand ENIG processes well enough to duplicate hyper-corroded nickel, but those that have not seen the defect usually never see it.

ENIG is the way you need to go. With ENIG you deposit a lot less gold. Too much gold will cause soler problems. Matt www.americancircuits.com

Hi Hyng, You can distinguish their color: ENIG with golden color and gold plating is a little bit dark than ENIG.

I would like to know the hardness figures of ENIG finish and hard gold finish. I can find the hard gold finish number and it appears to be 130-200 knoop. But what about ENIG finish?

If you wish to specify ENIG, your best method of doing it is to simply invoke IPC-4552 (or IPC-4553 for immersion silver) on the fabrication drawing. These IPC standards define ENIG and IAg, and I believe they specify 150-180 uinches of nickel covere
