I'd say it's much easier to do the external batter mod than replace the whole Dallas module. I've done it, works fine. There is a chip in the socket next to the module, best to remove it and put back when you finish with the mod.

The MPM SP200 was replaced by the model SPM around 1994. They also have the model UP100, which is from the SMTech purchase. The UP100 is the low-end MPM semi-automatic. Information on the SPM & UP100 can be found at http://www.cooksonee.com

i would look at an SPM from MPM(speedline) or an SP200 from Europlacer (speedprint not speedline) We have used both of these machines with great success from 16mil pitch qfps to .5mm pitch uBGAs.

The added benefit to MPM SP's is that, it forces the operator to look at quality. She won't have 2d or 3d to rely on. Also, it places heavy emphasis on a good setup.
