MSL Level 1 Component Question

Electronics Forum | Fri May 13 17:28:43 EDT 2016 | dyoungquist

Depends a little on how long it was exposed to the wet environment as moisture absorption by electrical components is a very slow process. That said, MSL 1 rated components can be exposed to high humidity indefinitely and still not need to be baked.

Ideally the MSL should be recorded on the label on the DRY PACK that you receive the devices in....that's the protocol the device manufacturers / distributors should use to help your goods in and shop floor personnel know which are/are not moisture

This is probably a stupid question but how come it is so hard to find moisture sensitivity levels from some manufacturers. Data sheets don't show this information. Is there any easy way of finding this out other than contacting the manufacturer or doi

Hi Peter, Out of the 1.5 billion components we shipped last year, we had 3 components back for solderability issues. All 3 had been taken out of their vacuum packaging and left to oxidize for a number of weeks. We don't see it as an issue, but we

Moisture Sensitive part - baking

According to J-STD-033 Table 4-1, the bake out time to restore the clock to zero is not only determined by the MSL level, but the package thickness as well. Section 4.2.2 states "SMD packages shipped in low temperature carriers may not be baked in t

Hi, do you know if your LEDs are moisture sensitive ? And if so what MSL level ? Surprisingly it seems that not all are, but some seem really sensitive. I imagine the differences are down to the plastics used and the LED manufacturing processes. I a

This is just me but I would just let it air dry. If you think about it. If you were using water soluble paste you would run it through a washer and it would survive. If this was a BGA i would be very concerned. If you are truly worried look an the ma

What does MSL 4 on a component package means?

MSL is "Moisture Sensitivity Level", and you should be able to find information on the websites of individual component manufacturers. For example, take a look at Infineon; http://www.infineon.com/greenproduct/msl_classification1.htm

I would first check the moisture barrier bag that the parts come in. There is a label showing the MSL level on the bag and sometimes included with the information on the reel. Transfer this info to your MRP system. If your receiving department throws

A reputable supplier will identify the level CLEARLY on the packaging and in the datasheet as well. If they are KNOWN to be MSDs, I'd be suspicious if they aren't marked. Or, they may not be MSDs. I don't think it's required to ID them as "M1" if n
