Jason: How did you determine that the deposits are tin oxide? What does this stuff look like? Klein Wassink "Soldering in Electronics" (p. 221, quoting original work by others). States (in effect) tin (or solder) quickly forms a protective oxide

| We are having some difficulty soldering a 240 pin Altera device. We use Alpha WS-609, a very generic profile for that solder paste, and a 6 mil stencil with laser cut apertures (1:1 ratio). This is a 20 mil pitch device (aperture size is 10 mils X

First of all, verify your storage conditions. Its useful that poor storage conditions can cause damages in devices (especialy oxidations). bye! Steve Aki

You need to remove the oxide before you can properly solder your [or any] component. Call your flux supplier ask them for a more active flux than you are using and for their recommendations on removing the flux residues.

Does the thermal conductivity of a copper trace on a printed circuit board change as the copper oxidizes? Is the oxide on copper a thermal insulator? If so, should it be considered in an analysis of thermal resitivity between a ground plane and a h

ROSA is your answer. Contact Greg Wood at the American Competitiveness Institute in Philadelphia for details. Here is his email: gwood@aciusa.org Store your parts in Static Intercept bags to eliminate any future oxidation. http://www.staticintercep
