I did some further reading yesterday and an ultra-sonic dip tank seems to be the recommendation, using a BGA cleaning solvent. I am not sure how such a process would affect the populated side of the board.

I use BioAct SC-10 and it seems to work pretty well. The best bet is to contact your solder paste manufacturer and ask them for a recommended cleaning solvent for the flux residues... Regards, Justin

Yes it is Ok and some folks ae doing it now, but unfortunatly IPA may not be the best solvent for this application. Take a small vial of the ipa and put some of your smt adhesive into it, shake it up and watch what happens, now step this up onto a l
