White spots on PCBA after Selective Solder

Electronics Forum | Sat Sep 12 09:49:38 EDT 2015 | davef

If the boards were still "wet" after DI wash, your [I assume] low res flux could be reacting with the moisture on the board and causing the white spots. The preheater in the wave could have more dryification than the preheater on the selective solde

Reflow oven bottom heaters

We found used Ersa HotFlow 2/14 reflow oven that does not have bottom side preheaters. Can it be easily and safely used in normal high mix/low volume production or is it built for specific products which does not need bottom preheaters?

Use them always - they help for even preheat of the board. If there is a temp sensitive/melting component on top side, turn them off.

Hi To perform a BGA repair of a 0402 size component, on a 23" x 18" board, is it necessary to preheat the entire board or only the area where it will be repaired? Thanks!

In general, no. If you've got the right BGA rework equipment, you should be able to locally heat the part area that you're reworking. Though, if you're finding defects related to thermal stress, it might not be a bad idea to pre-heat the rest of th

Not in our case, the pre-heat temp was not high enough. Also our pre-heat is only from top (KISS104).

Hand-Solder Pre-Heat

Mornin! We just had vendor in here pitching a "low-temperature rework system" which was intriguing, but too expensive. He did get me to thinking though, beyond heating ceramic caps before hand-soldering them, it seems like it would be advantag

My experience with different size boards and pre-heaters. The perfect world (right?) you would saturate the complete pcb with bottom pre-heat. But it is difficult with repair and rework equipment, not to mention the expense and foot print of large pr

We (ETS) are a manufacturer of reflow, curing and preheat systems and have had similar requests from customers in the past. One in particular required soldering onto an aluminum heat sink weighing approx 5 lbs. You might consider selective/robotic so
