So if I have a PCB with 2000 parts on it and one 0805 resistor has 63/37 plating on the terminations the entire assy has to be considered non lead free? That cant be right... can it?

We use a Brady label PTL-13-457 out of a TLSPClink printer on a 63/37 PCB. This label is supposed to go to Pb free temp but we have not actually tested it yet. - Jerry

My customer wants an SnPb 63/37 BGA soldered using SAC305 solder paste. What data is avaiable showing the long term reliability of the intermetallics of the solder joints?

First, make sure that 63/37 BGA can withstand higher reflow temperature of of lead free SAC305 GSx

Compared to 63/37, solder with high tin content: * Requires higher reflow temperatures * Demands tighter process control * Results in duller, more grainy looking solder connections Tell us about the specific problem that you seek help in solving.

I have a 5lb roll of .125" flux core 63/37 solder that I want to melt into a solid slug. Can this be done without making a huge mess and lighting something on fire ?

All of our reflow is with room air, 63/37 and SAC305. I believe nitrogen will get you better looking solder joints (shiny, less grainy under magnification), but per IPC, functionality and strength I don't think there is much difference.

63/37 is eutectic. It's either a liquid or a solid at a specific temperature. There is no in between. Lowering the temperature will do nothing except make the temperature lower.
