It is true that the use of saponifiers (and other water soluble additives) will lower the surface tension and aid in under component penetration. It is also true, however, that other specific design features within a batch machine can also aid in un

A surfactant (AKA detergent) is great for OA flux removal applications. It has a good surface tension reducing property and is more easily rinsed than soaps. If using a soap or surfactant, be sure that you choose one that has a good de-foaming pack

I ran into this about 2 years ago. The Rework Operators (all 3 shifts) would rework a device, rince the board with tap water (yep, 50k / Cm^3) from a nearby sink, then send the PCB to test (which is really ironic as they had to walk past the DI wash

OA stands for Organic Activated. In the good old fo SMT processes, a lot of different fluxes are being considered. RA, RMA, OA, etc. If you look at the present no-clean paste, it is actually RMA.

Patrick: The flux was OA, but you can get the same result with low residue flux.

We are anticipating switching from RMA to OA flux for both reflow and wavesolder in the next few months. If you use a batch cleaner running DI water only I would like to hear your experiences. How is it for cleaning under low standoff components li

1) The additional activity of the OA flux probably took care of the oxydation. How do you plan on taking care of the presence of conductive and corrosive residues from it now, though? You're not supposed to wash those parts with water. 2) The tomb

Good Day Everyone, Can anyone offer any advice on 0201 aperture design? We are looking at an application that will require them. We would like to do some experimentation first. Also, assuming an OA flux, would we need a type 4 or 5 powder paste to p

I've also seen "as received" defective devices. A tier 1 EMS I was working with put down an entire shift worth of these devices before it was noticed. Their rework costs were $$$. Just goes to prove that there's no free ticket and when bean counters

Dreamy "Ball rolling"? Are you a bowler? My nephew does the audio for the ESPN2 production of the professional bowling tour. Search the fine SMTnet Archives for discussion on assessing cleaning machines. For instance: http://www.smtnet.com/forum
