Selective Soldering - Barrel Fill

Electronics Forum | Fri Oct 22 19:07:29 EDT 2010 | jry74

To get out of a delivery pinch, I had to pre-tim some connectors because of contaminated leads. Make sure your selective wave speed and XYZ travel are close. Try doing a dry run across the board to preheat the PTH and then go back and solder them.

Selective Soldering - Barrel Fill

Hi, An useful information (Bruneel is right) that concluded with a root cause Note. Appreciated Heguman, Bruneel & John. Many Thanks, David, India.

Improving PTH fill using select solder

Electronics Forum | Wed Dec 19 09:41:14 EST 2012 | dyoungquist

What is your solder pot temperature? We found that on a 0.093" multilayer board increasing the temp of the lead free solder from 300C to 315C helped with the barrel fill.

Shorts & Dry Joints

It looks like the inside of the barrels on these holes are not plated. Check some raw PCBs and see. If not, solder isn't going to flow to the top or make anything resembling a good solder joint.

Wave Solder Question

Electronics Forum | Tue Jul 30 14:51:38 EDT 2013 | dyoungquist

How full is the barrel actually getting? Per IPC-A-610, 100% fill is the target but 75% fill is acceptable for Class 1, 2, and 3.

Time Cycle Result for THM component.

Electronics Forum | Mon Mar 17 10:26:36 EDT 2014 | cwwong1

Pls share with me the time cycle result for the THM component on board thickness 93 mils, I would understand the risk for not having to achieve soler barrel fill less then 50%.

How to Differentiate Class 3 and Class 2 products in terms of process

Electronics Forum | Sat Jan 10 09:04:47 EST 2015 | jandon

class 3 requires 100% barrel fill Class 3 requires 75% vertical fill of solder for component with less or more than 14 leads. Not 100% fill.

Is this a defect?

Electronics Forum | Sat Dec 19 04:46:24 EST 2015 | padawanlinuxero

Hello I am curious about an anomaly we are seeing in the new profile for one of our products, we run it in a wave solder and after it gets solder we see that the fillets are not even, we have took x-rays of the terminal but we see 100% barrel fill,

Solder Mask for Wave Rework

Electronics Forum | Tue Apr 28 07:22:46 EDT 2020 | stephendo

Are you watching for copper dissolution? At one place I was asked to check why we had no barrels with some PTH locations. It was being dissolved in the solder fountain during rework.

Pogo Pins

Electronics Forum | Mon Jul 31 18:34:30 EDT 2023 | emeto

I have done some of these. Pin in paste process with generous amount of paste to fill the barrel properly. Pick and place process is tricky too, but if you get them on tape and reel, you can have a custom nozzle and have them placed.
