Cleaning no-clean residue

Does anyone know of a reason, other than visual, contact, or testability, for cleaning a no-clean residue off a board? Are there any SIR or long term reliability advantages to cleaning a no-clean residue?

How does flux residue effect the quality and reliability of the board. This is part of our spray fluxer evaluation. One of the our concerns is spots of residue on the bottom side. Any input or reference to links on web will be greatly appreciated. `

Some low residue [no-clean] flux residues are cleanable, others are not. Talk to your paste supplier for a recommendation of cleanable low residue flux.

yellow residue

Using no-clean flux going thru wave when comes out there is a bit of flux residue left on board. If wiped the residue shows a yellowish tint. Any ideas what this means how to get rid of it?

We use a solvent called AK-225ATE (there is also AK-225T) that works great for removing RMA flux residue and no-clean flux residue. Info at http://www.AK-225.com

We agree with Grayman. You should clean your fixtures. If you apply [leave] low residue flux in amounts greater than the supplier recommendation, the remaining residue can cause damgerous corrosion. Certainly it is then no longer low residue.

You need to use speial cleaning solution to clean the residues from no clean pastes. Alpha has a solution,(I think Alpha 2010)that can clean no-clean residues. Zestron is another company which specializes in cleaning no clean residues. contact Alpha

physically lift board of after fluxing to visually see what is covered, or using thermal fax paper to get to see coverage works well. PROPER low residue or no residue fluxes leave benign insulating residue behind not corrosive.
