Check the drive make sure it is not going bad. Also most newer floppy disks are not very reliable.

The laser height can be changed to any level you want regardless of the algorithm you select.

Put a cd in your disk drive....this usually fixes the error. Good luck

Maybe your CMOS battery is dead! On some of these old system once the battery is drained the CMOS settings are lost, this would include the correct setting for detecting the hard drive and I doubt there is an auto detect . Try turning on the machine

i believe someone has left a floppy disk in the drive. eject it and reboot.
