Are currently investigating a change of solder paste for various reasons and are considering a move from 63/37 to using 2% silver solder paste for increased long term reliabilty of solder joints with gold finish PCBs and to further reduce reflow temp

Tuan - One of the reasons I suggested pre-tinning (aside from the negative effects of Gold on appearance and reliability) is the known slower wetting of Sn/Ag and Sn/Cu alloys as compared to Sn/Pb. If you don't have to be Lead-free, the high Lead

I agree with Chrys, get the spike temp up and wetting is not a problem. However, when the palladium mixes in with the solder the joint will become more brittle. You need to make sure enough solder is printed on the board to minimize the concentrati

I discovered that we have some gold plated (30 mico in.) through hole connectors which were Paste In Hole soldered (60 sec at reflow) on a HASL PCB. Do we have an embrittlement reliability issue? The calculated volume % of gold in the joints is about

Is there a steadfast rule of thumb for a good solder joint on an Enig Gold board. I come across this number 217C when discussing BGA profiles. Is this a published number? I sure could use a reference. Anybody feedback is appreciated.

Have you had your solder pot tested? I find that levels of contaminants can rend a solder joint that dull look.
