Dear Smtnetters: We have a customer wanting to strip off or overplate a gold microplated connector with tin (gold disposal too difficult) . Does anyone know if this is feasible? Regards BWET

If the operator has zero charge and the board has a 10kv charge, when the operator pulls the shorting strip from the edge connector after the coating has cured, there is a large potential for ESD induced damage.

I use Center Edge, and adjust stencil offset. It's very easy, you just have to give it the PCBs width. An other advantage is that If your PCB has scrap strips, and you lose them, or PCB changes, you can print it anyway.

We had a similar problem with contaminated leads that was rectified by having a company strip the existing finish and re-tin the leads. After the procedure the leads accepted solder with no issues.

I have been in the process of setting up a Quad 2C that lost its mod codes myself. Have you cleaned the glass encoder strips for X and Y? I was getting alot of motor errors until I cleaned them and I believe it was the error 4. Hope this helps.

waste of time - get your materials manager to work on the smt floor for a week and see how ridiculous this approach is! saving pennies while adding time between setups, looking for parts and as you said issues with pickup etc....

It is not the feeders having the issue. The tape on the strip of parts does not want to pull up easily. I just wondered if anyone else out there is having the same issue. Thanks for any feedback.

Does anyone do this? We have a small booth and lots of different kinds of media to try. it will be local stripping of coating on components for rework purposes. My main concern is ESD levels and how best to measure this. Any ideas or any papers o

We had occasional problems and usually solve it by pulling out pogo pins slightly to extend them a bit... Also note that electric feeders have "reel empty" sensor that gives the same error message (if you are using cut tape strips without reel)

The truth is that TH will give you better mechanical stability. If it is a part where you risk strip off the pads of SMT connector, don't make this transition to SMT. If it is a one time cable plug there and there will be not too much pressure, go fo
