I've tested boards with SN100C HAL finish, and wetting to the PCB finish was poor at best, using a no clean SAC305 paste.

I think Steve is on to it. The wire is not getting hot enough to wet. Either the solderer is attempting to solder too quickly, or the PTH is connected to a ground plane. The solder sticking up through the hole leads me to think it's connected to a

if the problem is wetting change the flux type. have you tried adjusting the temperature of the wave? if your getting 100% wetting id decrease the wave temperature, or try a flux that is less active.

All of what Dave says is spot on. I suspect that the most likely corresponding defects on your assemblies would be poor wetting and insufficient solder.

Comments are: * Its interesting, but not surprising that your time above liquidous varies around the sides of this component. * You are correct in thinking that it is better to reduce than to increase the temperature differences around the component

Q1. Do we really need to follow the IPC J-STD-001 Solder purity? A1. Yes, you should control impurities in solder. Further information: * "Allowable concentration of contaminating elements in solder: impurities are harmless unless their level goes to

So, there is a crack or gap between: * Solder and component termination. * Component termination and component body. Correct? Describe: * Coarseness / smoothness of the metal on the termination underneither the crack. * Solder left on the terminatio

Surface tension is a likely cause. Surface tension is a negative wetting force. You may have a solderability problem. Be sure your flux is properly activated according to the flux mfg. top side board temp. specification. When surfaces to be soldered,

If you don't have Plated through holes you will not get any hole fill! There is nothing for the solder to wet to. Problem solved? Russ

With poorly cured mask: * Wave soldering: Expect to see thin wavy band of dross imbedded in the mask in the wave solder side. * Reflow soldering: Expect to see a pinto board where the two tones of mask are [1] normal color and [2] a lighter color, al
