Hello All,

We currently have a policy where all operators have to wear gloves during all production operations, from Surface mount, assembly and final testing. Main concern is the transfer of natural oil on the skin to the product

I would like to get some feedback on the use of cotton gloves in electronic manufacturing. Who is using it, why and why not?

Do anyone see a need for such strict policy.

Is anyone concern about the transfer of skin oil to the product.

I appreciate your feedback

CF

we have more of a problem with transfer of salts from skin onto the products. Oils ect can be cleaned off in our solvent based cleaning system which we put everything through, but the only way to remove salts is with warm water. And we dont use a water baised cleaning system. We tend to use finger cots or rubber gloves rather than cotten gloves.

In fact the use of gloves will eliminate the transfer of oils and some organic residues to the boards, but then you may have an additional problem, cotton residues (lint) are also a concern specially when handling boards with fine pitch or small size smd (1005,0604). I rather use esd finger cots and/or esd vulcanized gloves, this has helped to reduce a lot reliability and process issues.

thanks for the feedback, good points about salt and lint residue.

Will take these on board

Years ago we hired a consultant who helped try to resolve our high solder defect rates. He recommended the use of finger cots - $50,000 in consulting fees later, we still had the same defects.

Consider using 100% nitrile gloves or finger cots. They are ESD safe and will not break out the skin like latex will. Cotton can absorb flux, solder, etc and will leave a lint residue however it is considered ESD safe.
