We are researching the purchase of a new or used BGA rework station. We need to rework various sizes/pitches of BGA's. Not sure on budget $'s - we will consider all options at this time. Our BGA volumes are fairly low. Any thoughts or recommendations from users of such machines? Thank You-

Have done some rework on BGAs but what kind of minimal pitches/solder balls you dealing with and what kind of volume of rework you planning to do on it? You can get a fancy one which is almost fully automated with alignment so on, others you need to adjust manually. Find out what your needs are/will be and buy one accordingly.

Well, my first thought is that you need to consider lead-free rework. Depending on the alloy, some stations may not be able to reach the correct temperature.

The best stations I have seen have a prism & shows both the pads and the BGA on a single video display, with both images superimposed. The operator visually aligns the pads to the BGA before placement.

Also, the station needs to be able to ramp up the temperature in the same way your reflow oven does. You don't want to use a station that is meant for removal only- they'll shock the component and possibly damage it.

If your BGA volume is very low, here is an alternative:

Remove the BGA with hot air. Clean the pads. Purchase a small BGA stencil and squeegee. (google/yahooo for them, I can't remember off the top of my head) Squeegee the paste onto the board. Use your pick and place to put the BGA at the correct location and reflow.

You could also remove the BGA with hot air, clean the pads. Apply tack flux, place the BGA by hand and reflow. Leaded BGAs will self-center. You cannot rely on no-lead to self center, though.

...and after you remove/replace the BGA you send the entire board back through the reflow oven??...that doesnt sound like a very good idea...

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do! We have to perform this on occasion as well. We perform this when we cannot get a board to stay free of tacoing, oilcanning, sagging or warping. (we needed a bigger preheater dimension wise) We have one now, and have discontinued this practice, only because of ease and not thermal concerns however.

We utilze solder mask to protect heat sensitive components and remove the PTH stuff. you only need to be careful of reflow cycles and ensure that they stay less than 5 in most cases

for a very repeatable rework srt 1100HR is a very nice machine... alot of $$$$ though.. i recently used a APE Sniper and i thought this machine was very simple but good to use easy to profile, and align BGAs.

If you have not made a decision yet give me call and I can put a complete x-ray/rework package together at a very reasonable price for you.
