Hi,

I have a Universal GSM (1995ish) which often rejects 0603 capacitors. I've tried adjusting the light level. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. What level of rejects do people get with this model machine. This happens with other components too but these capacitors are the worst.

I have one of these and what I usually do is undersize your measurements just a hair. Also , if you are still using the 3500 vision unit you might want to upgrade to the lantern system. Hope this helps.

Our experience has been similar to yours. Not the best placements rates for 0603 caps. I can't tell you an exact reject rate on our machines. We program them as leaded components which seems to help a lot. Also, not using gang picks is best. You should name your 8mm and even yout 12mm feeders slot specific so you get the most centered pick-ups.

Yes, we have the 'up rated' lantern camera. I'll try programing them as leaded parts, can't remember if I tried that. Naming the feeders slot specific sounds like a mammoth task! Although its an idea that I haven't thought of, and sounds like a good solution. Thanks for the help.

Slot specific is not too difficult. You will see a great improvement on your 8mm and 12mm placements if you do it. You will have to train your operators to teach feeders properly before each run as they won't be used to it. Universal's newer software creates "ghost" feeders that work the same way automatically.

Are you using 08MPF nozzles with front lighting? If so, these nozzles wear quickly if you place a lot of chip caps and resistors. I was using the 3500 vision system and found the vision recognized the nozzle once it was worn and became shiny. You can rough it up with some 400 grit sand paper. Another option may be to program the chip component as a 2 leg J lead device. I had to do this to consistently recognize 0201 components on this machine. Keep in mind that the last time I used a GSM was in 2000. Things probably improved since then.
