Thanks in part to help from the good people in this forum we've got our 1989 Fuji IP-1 working really great! We can run for hours without missing a beat (except to replace empty reels).

Although I'm careful to lubricate as per the instructions the main Y robot has started to make a new and unusual sound when moving fast (80% of max speed). I'm not exactly sure where the noise is coming from but I am aware that we're unable to lubricate the main Y-axis ball screw as it is hidden behind the thin spiral of protective moving sheet metal.

Can anyone give me a clue how and where to look to isolate this noise before it becomes a major issue?

I can't find anywhere in the manuals how you can get to this ball screw to lubricate/check it or even if this is where the new noise is coming from. How do you get to this part to lubricate it?

Hi,

Don't know about your machines, but our XP Fuji machines have a lubrication tube linking the under side of the machine to the top, so you can put a grease gun on it, and push grease into hard to reach places.

Does yours have that? If your hearing a noise, you might have already done some damage, and I would lube as soon as you can. Not lubing can wreck a part very fast, and that sounds like it could be the issue!

can't you pull the leadscrew cover back? you usually can on fuji machines. pull it back and clean the leadscrew down then smother it with grease and manually run the axis back and forth a couple of times. then repeat until the grease is not discoloured once the axis has been moved. i'm not sure about the IP1 but i'm sure grant will be right, there will be a grease nipple around the bearing to inject grease into it. if you can find that it'll work better than smothering the leadscrew. but again grant could be right, the damage could be done already. hopefully not.

Thanks Grant and Doug,

The manuals never tell you that you can pull the leadscrew covers back - but thanks to your suggestion I was able to access the lead-screw. It didn't look bad at all and had some lubrication on it. I added some more lubrication and will start looking for a lube point.

Bert,

This is a mistake by Fuji (yes they do make some). The fitting is on the table but is blocked by the retainer for the lead screw sleeve.

Always could go get a stethoscope and that seems to help isolate a problem that you may be having. I have one of these on hand because they come in handy.
