Conveyors and bar code | 18 August, 2006

Hi,

We have two complete SMT line and in this department we use conveyors for board manipulation. Concerning the wave area we are not full efficiency and I have to look for conveyors and bar code reader to make board manipulation an automatic process.

My first step for now is to find out all good conveyor and bar code reader companies. On this side I don't want to have response from vendors but the opinion of persons that working with this equipment.

Thanks for your help,

Frank R. CAD and Automation

Franois If the peeps don't answer your question, it could mean - Everyone: * Ignored your post. [no, there's 100+ views of the post.] * [But you] knows the answer is in the fine SMTnet Archives. [no, not likely] * Missed the question, while concentrating on making fun of Brits inability to spell English correctly. [mmm, more likely] * Got confused about your tying the conveyor and bar code together. [more, more likely]

We'll assume you want to know about bar code scanners and you know about conveyors, since you already have them in your plant. Previous responses to a similar question were => Fixed position (mounted) [In-line] laser bar code scanners: * microscan 800.762.1149 info@microscan.com [Ken SMTnet] * symbol technologies symbol.com [Russ SMTnet] * Keyence and RVSI inline scanners [B Norman SMTnet] * Datalogic TC1100 bartec-systems.com/packagingsecurity/tc1100.html [Rob SMTnet]

A good book for beginners is: Bar Code Book: Reading, Printing, Specification and Application of Bar Code; Palmer, Roger; Helmers Publishing, 4ED, 2003; ISBN: 0-911261-13-3

Wow, I didn't realise we sucked so bad... I never replied because I've never worked with a scanner/conveyor process for wave. I think I got confused searching the archives for Brit spelling humor!

Ive been lurking on the forum for a while so I will take a stab at this, mainly because there is no answer

I take it that you have a variety of boards being produced at the same time and are in fixtures so the conveyors dont need to be adjusted, and that you want to change the profiles on the wave solder machine to match the boards being soldered automatically.

If this is what you are asking for I know of no system that does this. However if the wave is computer controlled and you can write some code it could be possible.

However, to change the conveyor speed and pump speed would be a quick process while changing the preheat and solder pot temperatures can take awhile to change and the machine might shut down until the temps are at set point.

I just set the machine to solder the worst board the best we can get and all the others follow.

* Spent all their "free" time looking on National's site for llp manufacturing guidelines and didn't have time to respond, only to find they'd been pwnd by the SMT nexialist extraordinaire. :(

Thanks Bill and Dave for your help,

Sorry Dave if I didn't search for information in archives.

After wave process we have 2 ICT, 2 AOI machines 4 PVA conformal coating machine that will be use on 3 different lines. The quind of automation I want to use is ... at the output of the wave, with barcode system, the conveyors are switching the boards automaticly in the good line. And automaticly select the good program in AOI and ICT. AOI and ICT are already setup to work with it. For now YES we have conveyors but we only use them straight .. simple .. So I only want to know from the experience of other persons what are the best conveyor companies for that application.

Thanks,
