Run Fuji IP-1 at 100% speed? | 15 September, 2006

We've been running our Fuji IP-1 fine placement machine at 50% speed for the last few months because some of the cogged belts had cracks in them. The belts have been replaced and we're now enjoying 80% of full speed. Is there any reason not to crank up all the way to 100%?

We've had the machine since Christmas and it's working great but we have no prior SMT experience so any suggestions are welcome.

Bert,

Let it fly. The machine was built to run at 100% speed for certain components.

I recommend finding a copy of Fuji's "SMT Report" to help you with speed settings for different packages.

You can control the head speed on a part by part basis this way.

There is absolutely no support for Fuji in New Zealand or for the older IP-1 and MCS/2 programming computer. We got the machine working by studying the FIP-1 Operation Manual and the MCS/2 Programming manual and a lot of trial and error. We also have the electrical wiring diagrams, the parts manual and the calibration document which came with the machine (bought at auction).

The manuals don't cover speed issues and Fuji's "SMT Report" would help greatly. There are so many variables such as pickup delay, carrying speed, acceleration speed, etc. that can vary for each component type that the eyes sort of start to gloss over.

The MCS/2 software has the ability to collect, analyze and report production data but the manuals don't even start to tell you how to use the software to do these things. Perhaps we're missing some important instructions.

Anyway, thanks for the help and if anyone can share information on the Fuji IP-1 with us it would be greatly appreciated and put to good use.

Bert,

Hopefully the MCS still has PD's from Fuji or the previous user. The Transverse rate IP set in them should be a good guide for any new PD's you may need to make. This speed is usually set as high as possible and still get accurate placements. So some trial and error may increase the speed but in most cases it's not worth the extra time to find this max speed.

Most things in the proper are best left as they are unless you are doing a specific calibration procedure. I know a few people that changed numbers in the proper and caused their machines to crash and break nozzles and in one case bend the Z shaft.

You need a MCS operations manual for information about using the production data.
