marking standard for .1% resistors?

marking standard for .1% resistors? | 18 September, 2006

A customer specs .1% thin film 0805s on one product. The parts that came in the kit were marked 1002, and I suspect they were just 1%ers that were sorted for the tighter tolerance.

We were a few short, ordered the balance and got parts marked 103 which I would expect to see with 5%ers. We don't have anything to test them on to better than two decimal places and of course they all measure 10.01.

Soooooooo, I'm just wondering if there is a marking standard for .1%ers that would at least give me some sort of baseline to make more intelligent queries than I'm making here.

The mf'er (manufacturer in this case) doesn't address marking at all in their spec. so I'm out to dry there too.

Steve,

According to the Yageo site a .1% 0805 component would have a 4-digit code just as the 1% do.

Thanks Jerry. It's entirely possible that the parts that were originally kitted were Yageo so we at least have some chance of things being "as they should" on the bulk of them. Those also test out at 10.00 so we're not too concerned about them. The others I'm not so sure about.

Steve,

I don't think it was a Yageo if the value is 10 ohms. Yageo would label them as 10R0 for 10 ohms. 1002 would be a 10K ohm resistor.

Sorry, Jerry, I was just too lazy to include the k, as in 10.00k ohms.

I don't have a meter that will read out to 3 places, so something like 10.014 would read at the upper limit of 10.01. Same problem exists at the lower end, obviously.

I would get yourself a better meeter. All resistors are sorted as far as I know so if you had a good meter you could just grab a reel of 5% parts and sort them your self. I have seen the markings both ways so I would not immediatly assume the parts were not 1%.

Steve, I might be going crazy but I seem to remember 1%ers as being either blue or greeen instead of black, or, yellow ink on black.

Darby, these are "point one percenters", and are all/both white on black. I think it's a manufacturer's prerogative as to how they're marked (not really a standard, but a convention) so who knows.

As far as getting a better meter, I'm still waiting for pigs to fly. We don't do much testing here except with customer's setups so we don't have much capability.
