We recently upgraded our SMT placement equipment and are quite happy with them. One of our old SMT machines however had a glue head attached to it and we are now in the market for a standalone glue station. Our SMT placement rate is roughly 12k CPH so a blazingly fast gluer isn't needed. Our budget of 50k limits my options when looking for new equipment to suit our needs.

I've gotten quotes for a couple systems from Camalot as well as Essemtec... are there any other companies to look for... or look out for? :)

no, we can't go to screening as the majority of the products being glued are already stuffed with through-hole that has been bent and clipped. (boards weren't laid out in a fashion that allows for double sided SMT then through hole insertion)

Just a thought. You could always move your thru-hole process if your product permits.

"Bend and clip"... I haven't heard that term in years. Are you using bend and clip guns for your thru-hole?

We 'bend and clip' with good old fashioned needle nose pliers and side cutters. A typical size for a run would be 20-30 boards. Many of our designs are over a decade old and are fully TSO'd (FAA standard) and we can't change anything in the design. (not to mention that we have new products rolling out of R&D constantly and they don't have time to re-visit/re-design older boards) We currently have over 500 different products and many of those have ten's of derivitives each.

A glue dispenser is pretty much our only option. (preferably non-contact)

Gotcha, I used to be in charge of a pneumatic gun that clipped and bent the leads. Hand held units that worked rather well. The operators where very good at aiming the clipped lead too!

Anyway, you may want to visit Panasonic, they have/had a dispenser that we used to use. Small and fast.

Panasonics HD range of glue dispensers are good for this kind of job. I suppose the placement machines you have may also determine the dispenser machine. If you have Panasonic placement machines for example a Panasonic HD machine may fit into the foot print. It would be easy to program because it uses the same system as the placement machines

Asymtech glue machine would do the job..different heads are available. Fuji GL series machines are also good but require a offline controller Even with PTH components Screen printing glue is still possible,some call it pump printing? what type of placement equipment do you use?

We have 2 Assembleon Opal X II machines, each with 8 head upgrades placing up to 14k CPH.

We have got quote back from Essemtec, Asymtek and Camalot. The thing that is holding us back the most is our realatively small budget of $50k US.

Screen printing is completely out of the question as we have through hole components already placed and clinched in place in the PTH's.

Look USED, but be very very careful with dispensers. I would suggest getting one from a reputable used broker that is willing to do a demo on your baord with your material, and video it for you. there are only a few that will do this, most want your money and will ship "as is / where is" and tell you later "it was running fine".
