Hardware for ROHS builds | 3 November, 2006

Hi all

I'm gathering Manufacture part numbers that are ROHS for a future build and ran into a problem. The hardware (nuts and bolts for heat sinks, etc. is not ROHS. Does anyone know a harware manufacture that carries ROHS parts. I talked to McMaster earlier and they told me they don't offer ROHS compliant hardware.

Does the hardware in question actually have non-ROHS material in them or is it strictly a paperwork issue?

Would you be able to buy the hardware and have a lab test it for the banned substances? If they are not there, I wonder how many you would have to test to meet "due diligence" critera.

ROHS compliance is now more about "due diligence" than actually not having the banned substances in your product.

I'm not sure if the hardware has some of the banned substances, but our customer is in the medical field and the products must meet ROHS requirements. I don't think they would let us send the harware out for testing for fear of future problems. Thanks

What type of hardware are you looking for? Nuts and bolts? Custom machined/stamped parts?

In general, stainless steel is usually considered RoHS, but more expensive. However, medical equipment usually uses things like stainless steel. However, some suppliers still don't want to just claim RoHS on stainless steel, and they aren't willing to spend money on testing to confirm it. For zinc-plated steel, you need a clear chromate conversion coating, Cr III, rather than a yellow Cr VI based coating.

I have found hardware suppliers to be the worst for heads in the sand on RoHS. Since they don't supply JUST electronics industries, and often we are the small fish to them, they don't want to cater to our regulatory needs.

Gould in Canada has been good - claimed they could do traceability to their suppliers. Fastenal is willing to provide RoHS hardware - no traceability to their suppliers though. Kanebridge seems to be OK, I think, for RoHS hardware. Armour Screw Co. in the US has traceability. Manufactures right in the US, and guarantees product.

Just a few.
