Too much solder paste is NOT in our "Top Ten Causes of Tombstoning".

Try: * Searching the fine SMTnet Archives for background * Looking here: http://www.efdsolder.com/PDF/EFD-Tombstone-Troubleshooting.pdf

We have no relationship, nor receive benefit from the company referenced above.

The ONLY (unlikely) cause I could think of is if you are pushing the component into the solder, ending up with more solder on one side than the other. Why do you think it is the volume of solder that is causing this?

By the way, there are "low tombstoning" solder pastes out there. See http://www.aimsolder.com as I recall. This is kind of a gimmick, but it does work. As I recall, they use spheres of two different alloys, one that melts later and slower to inhibit the surface tension. This obviously can have all kinds of other effects, so be careful.

I tend to believe your problems can be solved with other process improvements.
