It depends where. In Asia, Panasonis is no. 1, Fuji the second.

Do not forget Siemens placers who have un important market portion of the whole Pick and place arena.

But as SaiWong says, it depends in which part of the World you are interested to investigate.

I wouldn't count Siemens as a major player for very long in this business. They are attempting to sell out to Samsung at this time.

In the US, these OEMs have this information, becuase they participate in a market study where they all post sales to a single market study.

Check with them directly, and they may share this data with some degree of accuracy.

I'd be shocked if Siemens was going away. They are a very big group in a very big company.

Yes, but recently we have seen several big groups from a very big companies been sold out (ie. Dover and some of his kids, etc.)

Asia-India are good references for pick and place market shearing.

Wow!...

Fastek: where did you get that idea! Siemens selling out to Samsung... sheesh... (where's my heart-medicine) That would send a major shock through the SMT universe.

Shocked ! Are you kidding. As a percentage of all of Siemens revenue you've got to get out the microscope to find what the pick and place machines are bringing in, not to mention profit margin. I would bet its the dog of the whole corporation.

It makes sense if you think about it. Siemens was a dead company ready to fold up their tents back in the 80's and early 90's. To their credit they stuck to their platform...got somewhat lucky and the market sort of came to them as the wave of users wanting the more modular type of platforms increased.

So they had their day in the sun and it lasted a few years but it didn't take long for Panasonic, Fuji, Samsung, Assembleon and everyone else for that matter to jump into a market that Siemens had to their own.

Now they are having to compete on technology and price.....and I'm sorry....the Germans will simply never be the low price leader. For as good as their technology is they have to be getting killed by the Japanese and Koreans on price. Plus those Asian companies have probably done a good job closing the gap in technology as well.

Siemens is the General Electric of Europe. Like GE, Siemens typically is in the top 3 positions ($ market share and profit) or they exit the business. In total revenue I expect Siemens to be in the top 2-3 globally. In units I expect Yamaha has the biggest share but in revenue Siemens is much higher. I seriously doubt Siemens would sell to Samsung which is a minor player of low end placement machines.

Siemens, along with Fuji and Pana remain the most stable suppliers serving the higher end of the market (auto, tier 1-2 EMS, telecom). My guess is Universal and Assembleon are the the suppliers getting their lunch fed to them. One has been for sale for years - Assembleon (clearly Philips wants out) and the other is Universal which just got dumped by Dover.

Perhaps Samsung would like to become more of a top tier vendor like a Siemens and therefore it would be a good fit.

Considering Samsung is the GE of Asia they could swallow up anything Siemens is in to....anything.

If you're going to be the GE of somewhere...I'll take Asia over Europe any day.
