A bit off the subject but I am hoping to get an answer on this forum. In dealing with our customer, there are times when I would say "soldering" (as in solder) and have customers correct me and state you mean "sa-dering" with the "ol" replaced by an "a". Am I off my pronunciation?

I know a guy who pronounces solder (SOW-DIR), and dross (DROSE).

Maybe, as the other guy says, your customer is from South Boston... but here's the "dictionary definition".

Main Entry: solder Pronunciation: 's-d&r, 'so-, Britain also 'sl-d&r, 'sOl- Function: noun Etymology: Middle English soudure, from Anglo-French, from souder to solder, from Latin solidare to make solid, from solidus solid 1 : a metal or metallic alloy used when melted to join metallic surfaces; especially : an alloy of lead and tin so used 2 : something that unites

At least they knew what solder was and didn't call it the "gray stuff" or "shiney stuff".

Once I read a health and safety report complaining about "sawdust". I was confused and thought maybe Manfred had been sawing something in the back and handn't cleaned up which would have been very strange.

Later Manfred came and asked if I had read it and I said yes and was wondering about the sawdust. He said it took him a little while to realise that it was because Barb from down east was concerned about the solder and had a bit of an accent.

And the lady taking the meetings minutes had previously worked in another industry.

It's pronounced soul der.

We pronounce it "buggery" as in the Marquis De Sade. This is where your customer came up with "sa-dering". The hyphen is actually in the wrong place; it should be as follows; "sade-ring". This is a derivation, shortening, or almost an acronym for "the Marquis De Sade is in my ring" - hence "buggery"

If you say SOLD HER infront of a police officer, he will certainly arrest you.

If you say SOLDIER infront of a police man his chest will puffed up.

hehehe

So it is better not to change your pronounciation even though some can't.
