Wave Solder Pot

Need some advice. A relay in the Ol' Treiber went out to the wave solder pot, causing the temp of the pot to spike up to 800 degrees F. Since the machine wasn't in use that afternoon, it is possible that the pot was that hot for 4 hours before it was noticed. The pot probabley holds about 500 lbs. of solder. Would this damage the makeup of the solder? Thanks for the help.

No, raising the solder pot temperature to 800*F will not affect affect your solder alloy. We expect that you had a fairly high level of intermetallic compound generation, but most of that would be included in the fairly high dross generation that had to remove after you realized the actual pot temperature. Good thing that it happened while you were at work, eh?

Nice! Always love to hear people using the Trieber. Sadly, I had to retire mine in favor of a new Electrovert recently. Good luck with it...

Thanks for the reply guys. One other thought, one of the engineers suggested that this could shorten the life of the solder pot itself. Granted, this is an old machine. What do you think??

If you're concerned, consider reducing the period used to monitor pot temperature in your process monitoring. Then, if you observe temperatures that ramp out of control more often than you expect, it might confirm the suspicion about damage to your machine.
