Temperature Probes for Reflow Profiling | 11 July, 2007

There are a lot of older threads on this topic. Any new alternatives to using temperature probes for characterizing reflow profiles? The mfg just DOUBLED the price on the probes to $989 each! I prefer using the probes for surface temp and the majority of leaded components, but not at that price!

ECD has them (thermocouples for profiling) for about $35 each or a set of 5 for $170:

I always use Omega personally.... they have a pretty extensive site.

Thanks Pete, I have plenty of Omega thermocouple leads on hand. By the way ECD is the mfg asking $989 for a probe that costs about $100, to which they add a pcb edge clamp.

ECD, KIC, or any mfgr. of thermal profiling devices will charge a premium for "simple stuff".

For example, ECD charges a grand for their "flux-o-meter", which is just a PCB with a hole pattern, a pallet, and pH-sensitive paper. You can easily make your own flux-checker.

That "Temp-Probe" which you talk about can easily be replaced with alumninum tape and a standard K-type T/C. It'll be JUST as accurate, if not more accurate, and less hassle trying to clamp the thing on.

KIC charges a few grand for a "Wavesurfer". All that is, is a pallet that holds your existing Slimkic, and has wave height "sensors" attached. I had a tooling guy make a custom pallet for me that does the same thing, and enables me to use my existing SlimKIC.

Samir, can You share Your mod for slimKIC ? :) I have one set free and wanted to buy surfer kit - but I could also try to make my own carrier if I know key points HOWTO :)

d0mino,

Given the fact that the SLIMKic has built in wave detection, you can just make a pallet out of 10mm delmat material, and drill a couple of holes on the pallet for the wave detect T/C's (ports 2 & 3 for left and right). All the wavesurfer is...it's just a direct connect to your slimkic with the connector and wires "embedded" on the pallet.

That's why I made my own, and here's how I designed it:

First thing you want to do is.... have a couple of holes,0.065" drilled-through and these should fit a standard 32AWG T/C wire. These will be fixed on your pallet. Put these holes on the front of the pallet a fixed distance from the leading edge. The T/C junctions should just protrude on the bottom of the pallet, so make sure you secure the wires so these don't move.

2nd, have a slot milled for your PCB. The wavesurfer is designed so you can put a populated PCB on the back to simulate what a real board would see, so you have an additional 6 ports available for profiling.

My pallet is sized up to fit our most common assembly, so width of pallet will be up to you and your product mix, and application.

Anyway, it came out to about 1/3 the cost of the actual wave surfer... Email me if you want a drawing.
