I'm looking for some info on contract manufacturing prices. What is a ball park price per SMT placement? I figure there would be two types: Placement A (easy, 0402 and up) and Placement B (0201 and lower and BGA).

I'd say it all depends on the CM, and how they cost out their production floor.

I've seen everything from a flat cost per component placement (something like .05/machine placed smt part, .15/machine placed tht part, .25/hand placed tht part) to straight shop-charge/hour of assembly, to large formulas that incorporate the ammortized cost of the machine, labor, overhead, along with a contribution factor that captures how much business a customer is giving the manufacturer.

Component cost or placement cost? Hand placed or machine placed? If all machine placed, how big of a board? Panelized or not? Any thru-hole? Any shields?

I'm looking for placment cost on machine placed SMT parts. Circuit is 2"x2" on a 6up pallet array. Also has 3 hand placed thru hole caps.

I found a website that will let you quote your part online. Enter in board info and it calculates a price. They have it at .35 per SMT placement. That sounds very high.

Ron, I'd agree that that sounds high.

Some things that may be contributing to it: Volume. lower build quantity often leads to higher placement costs.

NRE. Does this website quote an NRE for solder stencils, machine programming, and reflow profiling? If not, they may be ammortizing those costs over the cost per component placement.

Lot charge. Some companies will simply charge a lot charge per build for a small run or a prototype run. This won't calculate down to a good per placement cost, as they're likely ammortizing their engineering, SG&A, and other overhead charges into a lot charge.

I suspect that every company will vary on how it calculates cost. Even if I cost a job at .05 per component placement, the end cost to the customer will be quite a bit higher than that after overhead, mark-up, etc are added into the equation.

Ron,

I'm not sure what you are trying to get here. If you want a real price you need to submit RFQ's to some CM's to get real price. As mentioned there are many variables to account for and no single number works across the board.

USD $0.35 a part? I have a guy who will do the assembly manually and inspect afterwards for less than that!
