We're having problems figuring out how to optimize our stick feeders. We want to keep them all on the back side but the only way we've been able to get the data generator to finish optimizing without errors is to make all feeders movable, and it sends all of the stick feeders to the front. There are optimize table options and components settings to not allow them to move, but the generator errors out when we try every combination we can think of (Vios V1.36).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Good morning Steve,

What does optimizer say? What is the error generated by optimizer? Could you tell me exact error optimizer gives?

Topaz ties to fit all feeders mechanically into the feeder plate when optimization starts. Optimizer generates an error if mechanical feeder size has been incorrectly entered. Adjacent feeders might overlap your stick feeder or stick feeders might overlap each other being fitted to close. There is the �feeder size� option in the machine setup. Check whether feeder�s mechanical dimensions has been correctly entered.

Hi Steve,

I agree with Darby on this your poor operator will be walking a mile a day!!! but if you absolutely want them on the back try this .... in your components listing set the feeder position for all your vib components to a number between 100 and 150 your choice these are the back feeders, even if you need 2 or 3 vibs it won't matter since you have to teach the pick positions anyway. Select "feeders move" and it should work, if you require more than 50 feeder spaces only then will the optomizing put feeders on the back. I have never tried this so I would appreciate knowing if it works just out of curiosity. Good luck.

If we optimize with "feeders move" selected it just puts them on the front anyway, even if we've assigned rear feeder positions. I think you're right about wanting to default to the front unless it's out of positions.

What I'll probably do is move them to the back and then run the optimization again without allowing any movement of feeders to optimize just the placements and nozzle changes, at least until get stick feeder power distribution set up the way we want it.

Try this... set them on the back and teach their pick up position as stick feeder, change pick up rotation to -90 degree. before you optimize the program, change them to 8mm feeders , them optimize the the program as feeder fix. after the program has been optimize,go back in the component info,change them back to stick. in case if it not work, change pick up position to automatic instead of relative or teaching. let me know if it not work.and what's errors come up???

We have the same problem at times but our feeders tend to move to the back when we want them on the front. We have Opal machines but all the software should be the same. (assuming you have the offline programming/optimization software, AMS)

What you can do is do a full optimization and let the feeders fall where the optimizer feels they are appropriate. Then go into feeder viewer and move your stick feeders to the back of the machine and pull enough feeders to the front to ensure there is enough space. Then save your file.

Now open your file again and re-optimize... with a difference. THIS time in the set optimization parameters, under "Feeder Set Condition", select "Move Within Table". This option will keep all the feeders on the side of the machine you've told them to be on, but will move them to where it feels they should be for fastest placement within that side of the machine. :)

Yeah, we've tried that and keep getting an error stating that an impossible location has been specified (can't remember the actually wording). Right now we just move them to the back and change the feeder assignments but it definitely hoses up the optimisation.

If you're getting that kind of error it's most likely that your feeder bank hasn't been told that the stick feeders can be placed on the back of the machine, or like they said in earlier posts, the stick feeder size itself may be incorrect in the software settings. Both of these settings can be found in the machine settings under "specification information". For the feeder to be used on the back of the machine you must tell it what positions are available under "plate specification" and the feeder dimensions are found under "feeder specification" - "feeder size"

put the tubed parts on the side of the machine that is desired and then when optomizing in the condition portion set it to "feeders move within table" simply setting it to feeders move will result in the parts moving from front to rear and visa versa, if this doesn't work then try putting the feeders to where you want them and then turning the "Use feeder opt" in component information to "No" this should let the machine optomize the order of placements and feeder locations for everything but the ones switched to No. p.s I ran one of these machines for 7 years and I was the one running around back of the machine to fill I.C tubes and you are a cruel cruel person....Just because my boss put the parts on the back, I started assigning multiple tubes of the same parts to cut down on footwork.....Meanie...

Well, she's been puttin' on a little weight lately, so I thought I was doing her a favor.

Actually it really was a safety issue somewhat due to our own ignorance of the AC power requirements of the belt and vibe feeders. New machine to us, and a few surprises. We're not planning on doing much feeding from the back any more but it would be nice to know how to do it if we need it. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to convince my buyer to get this stuff on tape so I don't have to deal with sticks.

I know, cost is a function of quantity, blah, blah, blah.....

Now you are talking. Stick feeders are too slow and paint to work with unless you are doing a bunch of low volume boards. Stick feeders belong in the front of the machine. It's easier for the operators to keep any eye on them. The rear of the machine is ok if you have a shuttle gate put in. Putting them on tape is going to be cheaper and quality is going to be better in the long run.
