Affordable Inspection Microscopes? | 12 January, 2008

Does anyone have a good source for inspection microscopes? I want something with a lot of zoom. I want to be able to zoom in on one 0603 resitor joint. I am not sure what the magnification on that would be. Anyway that would be what I would want, but cost is my first priority. I am looking for a deal like $200. I see some on EBAY for $350 with 40x zoom. I would want boom and light as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. USA Austin, Texas

THANKS! B

Good luck with that. If you can find a source for 10X-40X zoom scopes on a boom stand with a fiberoptic illuminator for $200 let me know.

The light systems new are about $250.

As a point of reference, I think we paid about $2k for a Meiji system like you're describing when I last bought one new.

The ones on EBAY are 20x - 40x on a boom with a 12 watt ring light. Yeah the fiber optic light will definitely run the price up. These are looking like the best deal around. I was hoping somone on here would know of a used equipment dealer or something that has great deals on scopes.

I did some looking around awhile ago for a good used scope, and the best deals (on price) that I found were on Ebay, I am not sure if the manufacturers were reputable. Good luck, I was just looking for a good used mantis scope, but those are more then 200,

Thanks all. I guess I will go with the EBAY. AmScope brand for $350. I have used these and they work fine. Not bad. Not as easy on the eyes as a Mantis, but get the job done and the boom is durable.

I purchased 50 of these and they are very good scopes for the price. The guy that runs Precision World is also a good guy to work with.

$200 is iffy, even for a used, reconditioned unit. I got an aged Olympus for about that some years ago, but had to make my own stand. There is a Chinese-made stereo microscope (no zoom) that is absolutely worthless for inspection, because the "throat" is about 3 inches. So, you can't see anything that is more than 3" from an edge of a board.

Most of the high-end stereo-zoom microscopes have several eyepiece magnifications and then have optional objective lenses to change the range of magnifications available. You need a mount with enough reach to see to the center of your largest board. You want as much "working distance" as possible, if you need to poke at things or resolder joints when inspecting. I really doubt you need as much magnification as you state, I usually want LESS magnification, so I can scan rows of pins, etc. quickly. When I spot something suspicious, then I might turn up the mag. to about 20X, that's all I need.

Stay with the major brands like Bausch&Lomb, you can still get parts and optional eyepieces for even 40-year old units.

I just got a scope off of Ebay from Precision World. There have been some kinks, but, overall, it was a good experience. The scope I picked up actually zoomed a little too much for our needs (I need to use it for assembly, as well as inspection). They were very responsive on the phone, and I was able to get a lens that reduced some of the zoom, and gave me the working space I needed. There was also an issue with the zoom feature that required me to send the unit back on an RMA for repair...a process that, while aggravating because I need the scope, was actually pretty painless to deal with.

For what you're looking for, and that price range, I think you're looking for a used equipment auction, and a good deal. Check out Dovebid and X-Line.

"When I spot something suspicious, then I might turn up the mag. to about 20X, that's all I need."

Not sure what kind of stuff you're building or what standards you wish to meet (my qualifier, since I currently only have 20X capability myself but have no need for more), J-STD-001 specifies 40X for lands under .25mm/10 mils in "referee" mode. So, if you're working with 16 mil pitch you might want it and if you're a CM it looks good on your resume.

I only build my own products, so it has to meet my needs for QA only. I am doing some 20 mil lead pitch (0.5mm) and will soon be doing a 0.4 mm pitch part. I have more magnification on my microscopes (40X) but almost never need to go that high. If I had to examine every solder joint one at a time at 40X, I'd go out of business. Who needs solder stencil printing and reflow soldering if you have to examine every single joint?

After reflow, I give the boards a quick scan, only doing the chips and looking for shorts and obvious solder defects, and probing a few leads here and there for ones that move, ie. not soldered. I rework what is needed, then clean (high density only) and test. What fails the testing goes back for closer examination and rework.

No, none of my gear goes into vehicles, aerospace or other life-critical systems.

Hey, man, you had me at "my own products".

I just wanted to point out that anyone attempting to build per the J Std needs to remember that they do have a specification for magnification.

Funny you mention this. I tried this first. I have one now I am trying to sell for $87 dollars on EBAY. I am sure it could be useful for something other than electronics inspection. For electronics inspection of completed circuit boards it BLOWS!
