Removal of Hot Metal Shield for Rework | 14 March, 2001

Hi, I was wondering what tool there is in the market for shield removal. We are heating up the shield with a hot gun, and using a tweezer to remove the shield, I have a concern that this might have high posiibility that the components under the shield might be moved.

We need to have a vetical movement of the shield. Question, 1.is there a vacuum suction cup that can withstand the head by the heat gun? 2. are there any other way to remove the shield? (we tried to use magnet but it moved other components too)

In the past I've removed shields with a dedicated hot air machine. (Similiar to an SRT) This machine could remove and replace shields using a stereo microscope and a positioning system. Basically a special nozzle is designed for each type of shield. The air is only directed towards the edges of the sheild where the solder joint is. Hot air is applied through the nozzle and then vacuum is applied to a suction cup to remove the shield. I can't remember the name of the Co that made this machine. I do know they were based out of Germany.

I am not sure that how big of your shield, I am using Metcal Soldering System and modify the Metcal Removal Tip to cut into half. I don't want to use hot air and it may damage the component inside....
