Replacing small SMD PMICs | 10 February, 2008

Hi, I have a PCB with a blown PMIC (power management integrated circuit) multi voltage regulator IC. The PCB is rather rare and I need to replace the PMIC, its footprint is 7mm X 7mm with 12 solder points per side.

Unfortunately I can only solder this by hand. I should be able to remove it without too much trouble, But I really need some advice on how to solder to such small pads without accidentally bridging anything. I ordered a few tips for my Weller that range from 0.2mm to 0.5mm.

As long as it doesn't have a thermal pad soldered under the package, it shouldn't be a big problem. Small, pointed iron, stereo zoom microscope if you can find one, or a head-mounted magnifier. Lots of light. Rest the heel of your hand on the board to steady your fingers. Have fine solder wick handy if you DO get a bridge. I usually dip a foot of the wick in liquid flux and wipe dry with a paper towel. They don't put enough flux on the wick for the way I use it. I'm guessing this is 0.6mm lead pitch, which isn't really tough, with a little magnification.

Hi Grant,

I wouldn't worry too much. If your PCB has a solder mask, just glob the solder on and use solder wick to suck up the excess. A bit of Isopropal alcohol afterward with a cotton swab will make it look like it's been reflowed.
