Solder Market Information | 17 March, 2008

Folks, I work in Supply Chain and was wondering if anyone in this forum knows a website where I could find recent market information such as industry average price for the major solder products such as lead free and tin lead bar and paste. With the recent price increases of Tin and Silver, cost is a real concern nowadays and wanted to gauge our current solder prices that we are getting from our suppliers. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Paul.

I don't think a report dated in 2001 is what he is looking for. Check the metal markets to gauge market trends and call around to different vendors and get them to compete for your business.

You can follow the daily metal prices here: http://www.lme.co.uk/tin_graphs.asp

Tin is on its way to $21/Lb. Was $5.00/Lb. before RoHS

I forgot the benefits of lead-free can anyone refresh my mind?

From what I understand, the major reason Sn prices recently escalated was a crackdown on black market Sn mining in Indonesia, where most of our Sn originates. Add to that increased demand (not necessarily from RoHS, but from China, India, and other emerging economies) and yeah prices go up.

I know you don't like RoHS, and neither do I... But I don't think we can pin this particular problem on it.

It just doesnt make sense look at the conclusion from:

Fraunhofer IZM 2006, 287 pages, for EU committee WEEE 'Ecological and Economical Consequences of the Ban of Lead in Electronics and Lessons to be Learned for the Future'

Patrick,

I guess I didn't realize we used 29% of world's tin. A 30% increase in our consumption could make a pretty significant difference.

Talking about lead-free idiocy. Heres the result of what you get for being GREEN and paying trough the roof. Since the implementation of lead-free I dont buy green shirts any more, because they charge me twice as much as the blue ones On the positive side Belgium almost has a government after being more then a year without.

Would there be any chance they might come to their senses?

BTW to be able to attach pictures is a real cool feature.

Fellows, First of all, thank you for taking the time to respond to the post, however some of you missunderstood the main objective of it. I was basically trying to find historical and current average market prices for solder products. Metal information is a good source, however it just provides the cost of the metal alloy. Thank you again. Paul.
