Does anyone know of a free reflow profiling training guideline/terminology guide ?

I will be training someone from scratch and I would like to give them something to view while I am setting my agenda up.

IPC-7530 might help some but will cost you a little. We have an older OmniFlo that has a pretty good section on all that in the manual if you happen to have one of those.

This person needs to have the "mental faculties" and a basic understanding of science, and understand concepts like flux, solder paste, time vs. temperature curves, etc.

Do they have to be a metallurgist?? Of course not, but at the minimum they have to understand how and why they're doing stuff.

I got into this debate in my past life with some factory managers...they were of the belief that the worst chimp on the floor can attach T/C's to a board and "do a profile" without understanding the purpose.

Follow the traveller as per a engineer there shouldnt be a issue. If the engineer isnt correct the operator isnt to blame, unless they are not following the traveler or paying attention to parameters.

Is the messenger to blame, who sent the message?

Yes, BLAME. It's a common theme in manufacturing unfortunately. Also, unfortunate, is that the PROCESS is the easiest thing to blame and often the path of least resistance to the non-technical manufacturing personnel (operations managers and line supervisors) who need to answer to scrap rates and not "meeting the numbers."

I've always looked at the Manufacturing/Process Engineering department as a service that provides and supports the process. Simply put, we, Engineers, give you machine...we give you process, we give you work instruction, and we set up process parameters. However, it still takes people to RUN the processes. We haven't yet achieved "lights out" manufacturing contrary to what some people think.

Samir,

The simple solution to your frustration is:

NEVER talk technical to a manager talk numbers and $$$$.

I made the same mistake in the past, I wrote long sophisticated technical reports to justify change in the process and never got anything accomplished (technical reports or talk is boring to non technical people such as management).

Until I changed the first page of my reports to �These changes in the process will save the company or the department $xx,xxx �.

When I did that all my reports or suggested changes got management�s stamp of approval.

Give that a try and you�ll be surprised.
