Inconsistent mounting on TOPAZ-X | 10 November, 2008

Hello all, As you know, i have slowly begun programming the philips topaz-x machine. For one board that i programmed, everytime i place a board threw the machine, the parts mount differently everytime. The part that I am trying to mount is an inductor, and everytime it comes out, it is crooked. My question is, how do i correct this? What causes components to mount crooked?

thank you

steven

Is the part being centered via pads or by outline?

Is the part height set correctly. Too high and it gets ped. Too low and it's jammed into the board. Both can cause poor placement.

Is the package too large for the nozzle? They can rotate (or just fly off) after centering if they're not stuck solidly to the nozzle when they're being rotated for orientation.

One thing to consider regarding the capacitor, The leads are not 100% straight beneath the plastic bottom part. And if you align with regards to the two leads, the leads will be aligned to the pads of your board, but the body of the capacitor is looking like it is misaligned. Worth checking at least. Otherwise check your vision file, the lead width must be correct.

Regarding the inductor, Not sure how this component looks like, but as far as I can see on the drawing, there are 4 leads on the component, if you use an R0805 as vision file for this component there could be problems, better is maybe to modify an SO6 or SO8 to the outline of your inductor, re-teach the sizes and lead number to match your incuctor.

I've seen here that your are a new user of the Topaz machine, and here's a piece of advice, when teaching a component, as I remember on the old machines there is a function called monitor mode, this is set to none as default. Change this to something else (lack of memory from my side again) I believe it is called vision result or datum pos. In one of these, there will be a cross on the screen, indicating the orientation / rotation of the component when you do a vision test. So when teaching your component, run it several times, and check if the cross (rotation of the component) is consistent. You can also open the door of the machine and bump the component a little bit out of rotation and test again, is the cross still consistent to the body of the component? If so, you have a good and stable vision file.

WHat about bad mounting? i have 2 fixtures and sometimes it would mount with no misalignment and sometimes it would. WHat could be the problem in this case/ I know the fixtures are good because they work on a different program that we have. I don't understand how it mounts differently each time. Im talking about the whole PCB not jsut a component.

If the whole board is shifted then it must be a problem with the clamping of the fixtrue to the machine or the board to the fixture, or the fiducial reading that is incorrect.

Are the fixation of the board to the fixture the same in both programs? Are the fixation of the fixture to the machine the same in both programs? (Have no idea on how your fixture looks like or works)

Otherwise it must be the fiducial reading that is not correct, the vision file is too wide and lets basically anything pass as an ok reading, check vision parameters on the fiducial you are using. Is it the same type of fiducial that you use in the working program? If so copy the vision file via the database to the not working program. Otherwise try to adjust it in the not working program. Good luck!
