LCD soldered by wave... is that possible? | 11 November, 2008

Hi.

We're developing production strategy for a new product and it have a display, as the yearly volume is very high, is almost impossible to made this by hand or by selective soldering. I wonder if anyone of you have done something similar with displays (wave soldered); on a webpage on the net (http://www.circuitnet.com/articles/article_44478.shtml) they mention a lot about taking care of preheat temperature... Is there other considerations that we have to put on pro/cons list???

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is possible, and yes you do need to watch out for preheat and soldertime. The displays will get the hottest after they leave the wave, when the heat creaps from the PCB to display. Check your datasheets and do some testing for maximum heat. Too much heat can mean a defect or the background of the display changing color/ getting darker.
