General SMT Question | 20 November, 2008

Hello

Im a uni student trying to find out information on SMT. Ive just spent around 2 hours searching for SMT information and can not find anything.

More i spend time trying to figure out how, im starting to think, this is not something you can do at home. Im hoping im wrong, and i hope its proof on the lack of information out there(or i just cant find it). Alot of information on techniques of how to solder but non on how to create or which software to use to design SMT boards, and what type of process to go through to create these boards.

I am asking for any source of information which might be usefull for me,

Thank you in advance

VT

Naw, you can do SMT yourself without all kinds od fancy equipment.

We're not sure how you could spend two hours on the net looking and only find us, but here you are and here we are. We suggest that you Google => homebrew smt. You'll find so much stuff, your head will be spinning and you'll have to come back here to quiz us on the wild stuff that you see.

Here's a couple of links on board design software: * http://eeshop.unl.edu/cad.html

* http://www.freebyte.com/electronics/

Orian,

SMT = surface mount technology. The best you can do is to find a book and read it several times. May be Davef is gonna give you the best chapters.

You want to make it from scratch? Design the circuit, do the layout, and make the PCB, then populate it?

You can't make the raw boards at home.

What are you studing at uni?

In the good old days, I've made raw boards at home.

Layout the design and then transfer it to a bare copper clad board.

Etching it out is the fun part. I grabbed our 9x13 pyrex baking dish from the kitchen. Using metal etching dish doesn't make sense. You won't have much of a dish after a while.

There's still kits out there today for doing this.

Hi, Can You specify what "Uni student" means? Since I am from Sweden and I am not familiar with this phrase. Not sure what you mean.

Certainly I will try to help you out here. Try this for more basic info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-mount_technology

I like your spirit. Well... Best Regards, Mika

Wow im amazed by the amount of replies I got, thank you all for your time.

Davef, Mika, and eetour Thank you all for the websites, I've found googling homebrew to be most useful there really is alot of content, too bad I didn't search for that in the first place and save some time.

Emil: one of the books I've found was over $200 (im in the UK it was around 110 pounds) and that's a bit too much for me.

Stephen: Thats exactly what im after, my experience with PCB is limited (we usually just build things on veroboards), but I do have a general idea. I know of software which designs Pcb's but the locations which we have to solder are usually supposed to be drilled to fit the components through to solder on the back. (Davef's sites have what i was looking for)

and I'm studying Electronic Engineering.

Frank: if its just to etch then yea I know of places I may get my hands on tools to do such things at home. Like http://www.rapidonline.com/Tools-Fasteners-Production-Equipment/PCB-Equipment

So far I've learnt: 1: need to get my hands on Surface mountable components that I need

2: some solder paste (I'm still looking into what type of flux rating and mixture of materials inside that solder paste will be the type I want)

3: some how design the layout.

4: some how get it on a green back board

5: put everything together and on top of an electrical cooker.

*edit* Thank you all again, i just whent over everything which was posted here in more detail, and the information i need is all on here.

Yup! SMT's really easy stuff. Not sure why people here make it brain surgery.

What?!?1?!? I use the same oven for both. Doesnt' effect anything cause everything taste OK. Gotta be carefull of wires cause they can burn and catch fire. Speaking of, time to hit the bar.

If you don't want the headache of etching a board you can design online and order a board for a couple bucks. The place I used had free software......www.PCB123.com
