beware of job scam | 25 February, 2009

hie, just to warn engineers/technicians and others that have thought of working in Italy. Please beware and be clear of what is being offered.

- especially ASIAN

Don't be fish in by the sweet talking owner. This is a personal experience and i am glad that i have realised it and back to my home ground.

To work in Italy or other place in europe, it is advisable to get the work permit. I realised this after checking with the Italian Ambassador in my country which is not the same as mentioned by the owner who said i can work with a social visit visa.

My Experience.

- This particular company offered me for what i can do as a service engineer. But has been delaying my payment for 4months. When asked, this owner told me that in Europe, it is a norm for Engineers to be paid after 30 days of service. When asked again, the number has become 60days and so on till now i have not receive a single penny from this company.

- The machines that i service during my stay with this company is all craps, yes, it is a second hand machine and i do not expect it to be in good condition, but at least sent it back to the warehouse before sending it the site so that we can refurbish it. Because when the machine arrived customer place, customer would like it to run as soon as possible. But the machine condition... craps. Need spare parts and this owner will said he will order it immediately, which mean a couple of weeks to come.

- This owner is too proud and have thick face to mentioned that with the salary he pays me, i am able to buy a house every year. But he didn't realised that he has not been paying me.

- In the company mission, it says to provide reasonable price for his local customers. Which i think is not sincere. Customers will only get benefits if the machines are in running condition which most of the time, it requires me to spent more than 2 weeks to get it running due to waiting for spare parts.

- And weird enough, everytime when i ask about the machine condition at the time he ordered from some factory, it is always in running condition. Then how can it break down on arrival to customer place?

Basically, i am not out here to make a fuss over what i have been going through, but i just want to share it among Service Engineers and Technicians to really think about job offers overseas.

And i hope that the company that did this to me can get through this crisis by using the money i earned for him plus the salary that he has been holding since 4 months ago.

well, you are rite about ppl that buy craps products like my previous company that scammed me to work for him for free does. he got most of the parts from china, a cheap one. Actually there are good supplier from china that provide high quality parts, but because he cares too much about making big margin from his customer, he decided to get the worst grade parts.

i am asian. and now i have the worst impression on the country that i was scammed to work by this guy. All it has is a good scenery, and loads of ppl that give empty promises.

And a place where IMMEDIATELY means a couple of weeks of months.

the company name is similar to my screen name. you will be smart enough to notice it, it is in forli, italy.

machines that i service is Yamaha/Philips. He sells feeders too, but junk feeders that he take for free (thats what he said) from customers and asked me to repair, but it i can only repair those feeders without calibration because he does not have the calibration jig. But thats not what he said to customer...

apart from Yamaha/Philips, he sells MPM, DEK, ERSA and you name it, he got it. Latest i heard is that he has got the universal/GSM machines from US. All 4 unit was said to be in running condition, but when arrived to customer place, software was corrupted, vision module was malfunction. When i asked him, he will say the same shit, "When i was there, the machines was running production, picking component and mounting"

judging from the machine appearance, it has been in warehouse for quite some time.

i hope it is enough info for all of you. i just cant mentioned the company name...

Hey, changing jobs shouldn't be in blind faith. Whether abroad or in your own country, you always need to do your "homework" before taking such important decision. I have lived in China for sometime and was closely associated with the Electronic Manufacturing environment there. Let's not generalize poor product quality from Chinese Manufacturers or Suppliers, as many of them have the BEST competitive products, that compare directly to their Japanese equivalents. It always depends on your norms for vendor selection to get dependable products from any Supplier worldwide. On the other hand, Europe also hosts an excellent work environment provided you did your "homework". Which place are you from, and what are you presently working as?

define what you mean my "homework"? if it has got to do with the law, then i admit that i did not do enough "homework"

i did not generalize China products as poor quality, i did say that some products from China is produced in good quality. In other hand i am importing some products from China too.

yes, i agree that europe provide an excellent work environment, just that the ppl in Italy, especially this owner, is a jerk, keep on twisting his words all the time.

let me stress that not all Italian are the same, i do come across some customers who are polite and nice peoples.

at this moment, i am running some business, just a small business, importing goods from China and sell it in my country. I did not change job, i just fired my boss for being such a jerk and delaying my payment since October, and i know if i continue to work for him, he will delay my payment till 6 months or more, which he will claims that it is a norm in Europe.

In the Third World, everyone's got their hand out and anybody can be bought!

Heck, it's like that in Illinois too....LOL.

well, you have to differentiate between "bought" and scam.

If bought, means there is a transaction, you provide your service and in return you receive your payment.

Scam, like this Italian, he first make payment for the first few months then and then start to tell bullshit about payment for engineers in europe is after 30 days, then when asked again, it becomes 60days and again i asked, it then raised to 90days, i wonder if i continue to ask, it will then become 150days.... what kind of law is that?

so, like i said early in this thread, its a scam.

Exsydeco,

I speculate how You did not look forward to claim Your due Pay Checks for whopping 120 Days !!!

It would've been much better if You associated with Local Administrative Bodies in Italy however You was there for long 8 Months and knew what & how. Moreover, what ever must be European Laws has to be incorporated in Your Offer Letter/Bond & You would've been thorough with all of them well before Your Flight took off towards Italy!

Service Engineer Professions across all segments are Corporate valued & concerned Executives might have helped You out there in Italy again.

Anyhow, it is nice to know that You are running Your own Business whether it is small or big. After all most of SMEs starts at such phases & reap good returns long way.

While I hope that every inch of each on of our Businesses has to see fore-fronts of related Industries, call it as a Scam or Excellent Support/Service, Good Luck again.

Tnx, David, India.

were you doing the service job in italy or in asia? the only way the owner can do that to you in italy is that if you are an illegal worker...which means working without proper immigration docs like Working VISA...else you can go to any Italian Labor agency that can help you prosecute such a scammer...

In his first post the guy said he was told he only needed a social visit visa. So it sounds like he was unintentionally an illegal worker in Italy.

Ignorance of law does not shelter such mistake. Anyone seeking to relocate needs to first assess the regulatory compliances of that place and then take suiatble decision. Employers will always guide you in their favour and hold no liability to their act.

Talwadker,

thats the thing... this guy didnt guide me in the right way and he ensure there is a special arrangement between Italy and my country that i do not need a permit. And i was too easy to believed him till i found out the truth.

but its ok, i have learnt from this lesson and am back to my country for good. Checked with the government office and realised that there are many documents to submit before i can work in italy...

like i said, i just want ppl to beware of any job offers abroad.

I am a service engineer. Specializing in YAMAHA machines. It is call Philips/assembleon in the europe.

I am from Malaysia. Back here, engineers that work in SMT field basically have to know the all machines in the production line. Start from Loader to unloader.

i would say, after been to italy, i seldom see production line... most of it, a printer, few scattered machines, and one oven... and one product uses one machine.

no AOI machines, no SPI machine... and one thing that is really different is, no quality data being collected... different, really different.

Hello, as some guys already pointed out there is some paperwork to do to get someone from Asia to work legally in Europe. But it's not impossible. We got an Assembleon service engineer in from India about 18 months ago, he is still working for us, partly refurbishing machines in our workshop and partly doing service jobs at customers factories. Employing someone legally in Europe is maybe more expensive than in other parts of the world. But it also gives benefits like social security. And it's the only way you can be sure of not getting surpises like having to pay all the taxes and social security bills you didn't calculate with before.

actually i dont mind paying the tax and social security bills. all i wanted was no delay in payment. and no bullshit about the italian laws like this guy mentioned to me... which i find it to be ridiculous.

well, i hope with the money that he still owes me, helps him get through this crisis... though he said ITS A SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR BIG COMPANY LIKE HIS.

All i can say is what an experience and eye opener for me to meet this guy and really, he has give his countrymen a bad name... sigh!
