Need help with Philips CSM84 or YM84 | 28 March, 2009

Hi,

I bought a Philips CSM84 machine 2 weeks ago. I have no experience on SMT machine so I try to learn everything from the manual. There is an error message when I program a simple program and try to get it executed.

"PCB FIXING ERR. LOCATE PIN NO GOOD."

I checked the only locate pin (F3 under 2. MANUAL) and DI/DO (DI26) seems to be functional. However this message is keeping showing so I have no way to even test a simple program.

I do not know whether the machine is 100% functional. I bought a used one and the seller said sold as-is.

If anyone there can provide a hint, I will appreciate your input. Also, how to back up the machine defaults settings? Does anyone have a RS232 utility program that can be shared with me? Thanks in advance.

Peter

Hi Peter,

I'm a new user of a CSM84VZ, so I have only a small grasp so far about what goes on in the machine 8-) There should be two locating pins. One fixed and the other adjustable for different board widths. Small cylinders are coupled to the pins, and there are position sensors to confirm the position of the pins to the controller. You should be seeing both pins go up and down when you use the F3 key. Perhaps there is something missing or loose in this area. Does anything happen when you press F3?

I use a simple "dumb terminal" program to get files in and out of the machine (they are simple ascii text files). I'm not at my shop to verify, but I think the CSM needed a valid CTS signal to talk. I tied a couple of the CSM's RS-232 signals together which made it happy.

edit:

After doing a little reading, if the CSM locating pin hardware seems to be in order, that error can happen if the pcb does not have holes (~3mm dia.) to receive the points of the locating pins. I think these holes are usually 5mm in from the board corners. If your boards do not have holes in their corners for locating pins, try a different locating method such as "edge clamp with push up".

Hi Tom, You're right. I do find the second locating pin hardware. Now I got them both up/down when F3 is pressed. Thanks. I don't see any pin on the hardware and no edge clamp hardware either :-( , do you know any way that I can bypass these hardware or hold the board while mounting?

I try to run a simple program under the utility/pic/diagnostic and an error message pops up: X- soft limit is not good. PLS. SET -336.41

I tried to do so under machine configuration but I guess the -336.41 is far beyond the max. left point of the machine's arm can move so the machine stops with emergency light on. Do you have any idea what happened here?

I will try to use a terminal program to communicate with the machine first. I know those CTS/RTS.. lines need to be twisted if a stright cable is used. Thanks for the hint.

Hi Peter,

I forgot to mention that the "locating pins" are on the front conveyor rail, and have conical points that poke partially into the holes in the pcb locking it into position. Also as part of the "locating" arrangement are two more slim pneumatic cylinders on the rear conveyor rail. These have pins that rise up and clamp the rear edge of the pcb against small metal clips on the rail. They just press the board up from underneath.

The "edge clamp" method uses two very small cylinders mounted horizontally on the rear conveyor. These push against the rear edge of the pcb, pushing it forward against the front conveyor rail. Also, there is a "pushup" system that works with the edge clamps. This is a large flat steel plate under the conveyor that rises or falls pneumatically. There are (or should be) some pins with magnetic bases. These are placed on the pushup plate so that the pcb is supported by them when the plate is in the up position. You arrange the pins as needed to support the pcb being processed. The "pushup" can also be used in combination with the "locating" pins to provide additional support to large boards to prevent bowing.

In summary, you have three methods: Locating pins only Locating pins with pushup Edge clamp with pushup

On the limit problem, all the machine settings and pcb programs are held in battery-backed ram. If the battery is dead, everything would be lost when the machine is turned off. The previous user may also have screwed everything, or some things, up. These can all be put back manually, or through the serial port. The basic machine settings are in the "mch" file, and descriptions of the various configuration settings are in the rear of the book. If you like, I can send you a copy of my mch file, which might help by giving you some numbers which should be in the ballpark. There is also another smt.net user, "andras" who has kindly made available the service manual for these machines. He might make it available for you to download, and it has procedures for setting these machines up from scratch.

Hi Tom,

Thank you very much. I saw the MCH file and printed out. I am still trying to download the manual. It will take a while. My intention to use this machine is to mount some IC with 24mm wide tape. By the way, do you know anyone sells such used feeders? Thanks for the mch file and manual again. :-}

You are welcome!

Talk to Nick at http://www.electronicassemblymachineryexchange.net

He is the one who hooked me up with the CSM84VZ, and I think I have seen him post here, too. He has been a very good guy to work with.

I recently purchased a CSM84VZ Type PA130460. The machine did not come with any reference material and its a pain learning by creating errors. Can anyone share with me any related material that is necessary to get the tool running smooth. Thanks in advance.
