Lead Free Solders | 18 December, 2000

What are the driving reasons behind the use of lead free solders? What is the environmental impact of leaded solders? What effects can be expected by continued use of leaded solders? Is this something that we sould be concerned about world-wide?

The main concern is lead poisoning, but environmentalist debates exist as to how great this problem is,as compared to lead containing paints, where the problem is well recognized. There is no legislation in the US mandating lead free solders, but the European Union is actively considering such legislation under what is known as the WEEE Directive(for Wastes in Electrical and Electronic Equipment).Japanese consumers are also more environmentally driven than the US.Hence, internationally,US markets could be affected.

Can you recomend any information sources regarding European and Japanese Lead Free Solder Regulations? Are these pending regulations (WEEE) something that the entire EEC is looking at? As a company that exports to Europe what adjustments can we expect to make to our manufacturing process? Do you anticipate changes to US regulations regarding the use of lead free solders?

The best information source is the new IPC Roadmap-contact David Bergman at 847-790-5340.He can likely supply direct European and Japanese sources.I believe thet the WEEE directive is for entire EEC.Companies exporting to Europe will have to comply with these European requirements. At the moment, there does not appear to be an equivalent drive in the US.
