Anyone Familiar with Zip-Top Moisture Barrier Bag? | 25 August, 2009

Hello All,

I was poking around the internet and stumbled on a website selling reusable zip-top Moisture Barrier Bags. From the page, it's hard to determine if the bag MUST be heat-sealed to keep moisture out (not sure why you would want to heat-seal it if you don't have to, which makes me think heat-sealing is needed to keep moisture out).

Has anyone used these bags before? It would be nice to throw your components into these bags without heat-sealing them and still protect them from moisture. Link to the site is below, they are half-way down the page.

Any info on these is appreciated. Thanks all.

We don't use bags like you describe. All of our bags are ESD shield bags that have dissipative and antistatic attributes.

We'd be uneasy about the zip lock closure thing. Use your static field meter to determine the charge generated by opening and closing the bag with the closure.

Hi, I have no experience of the ZIP TOP bag you refer to but my advice is to follow the guideline of IPC JEDEC 33 for sealing bags containing MSDs....it states' the MBB should be heat sealed'. I cannot imagine that a ZIP will keep the moisture out and won't match the spec for the WVTR of the bag material itself....and maybe not even meet the IPC JEDEC 33 spec. Using dry cabinets like those offered by Totech seems to be becoming the easiest way to control storage of MSDs, and IPC JEDEC 33 recognises them as a suitable way also.

I agree with Graham Cooper. -033 does not explicitly allow for the use of this type of bag. We had the same question asked here a few months ago and my answer was the same. While it's possible/likely that the bag material meets the WVTR spec, my concern is with the seal itself.

I think -033 needs to address this if these products are being advertised for use as "moisture barrier bags". It's tempting to use them over buying a sealer PLUS the bags.

We have been receiving LEDs in these type of bags. The HIC says they are good. But we don't want to find out that there is a problem, at test or by customer returns.

Does anyone reject them at receiving as not properly packaged when the parts are MSL 3 or 4?

I assume the spec follows most spec protocols which means "should" is a recommendation, not a requirement (which would be stated as "shall"). Still doesn't sound like a good idea though.
